
- Marine Found Shot in San Clemente - An unidentified, 21- year-old active-duty Marine from Sacramento was found shot to death this morning near a remote area of San Clemente. The victim was wearing desert fatigues commonly used in Iraq and Afghanistan and his hat was found nearby. The man was shot in the upper torso and was lying face down. Investigators believe he was killed near where he was found. A doctor walking on a trail saw the body in the ditch. Police estimate he had been dead less than 24 hours. Agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are assisting sheriff’s homicide investigators.
- Alleged smugglers sexually assaulted immigrants - An immigrant discovered in a South LA drop house told authorities she was impregnated by one of the smugglers, and witnesses reported that several other women were sexually assaulted. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents also found two weapons in the house, a 22-caliber pistol and a stun gun, which the immigrants said were used to control and threaten them. Sixty illegal immigrants, mostly from Central America, were found in a single-family home on S. Normandie Ave, living among trash and rotting food. Among the immigrants were three toddlers and six teenagers.
- Ill child was brought home from hospital not stolen - An Amber alert has been cancelled for a 10-month-old baby allegedly kidnapped by his mother from Children’s Hospital of Orange County. The baby has been found safe in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Alakahi Thompson was taken from the hospital at 10 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Ida Marybel Torres, is under arrest along with her cousin. Broadcast reports indicate someone who knew Torres saw the story on television, called her on her cell phone and told her to surrender. The baby, who was being treated for pneumonia when he was kidnapped, is being taken to a hospital for evaluation.
- 3 woman attacked by 10 women in park - Detectives were sent to Mason Park, at about 10:40 a.m.. Police found three victims, all unconscious, who had been attacked. They were taken to a local hospital. Witnesses said at least one of the women was sexually assaulted as well. Investigators also say they have two suspects in custody with at least 5-8 more at large. Chatsworth High Principal Tim Guy says the three women were students at his school and further added, in a statement released through LAUSD, that they were “under the influence of an unknown substance” at the time of the attack.
- Woman Indicted In Missouri MySpace Suicide Case - A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Missouri woman for her alleged role in perpetrating a hoax on the online social network MySpace against a 13-year-old neighbor girl who then committed suicide. Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl. Drew allegedly helped create a MySpace account on false premises to contact Megan Meier, who thought she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans, who turned out not to exist. Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.
- Private eye convicted of using his powers for evil - A Los Angeles federal jury has convicted Hollywood private investigator Anthony Pellicano of racketeering in a scheme that prosecutors say used wiretaps and other illegal tactics to target the rich and famous. Federal prosecutors accuse the 64-year-old Pellicano of wiretapping stars such as Sylvester Stallone, Gary Shandling and Kevin Nealon.
- Car rams into CHP hurting officers, driver arrested - Two CHP officers were hospitalized this morning after their patrol car was rammed by a suspected drunk driver on the northbound Golden State Freeway (I-5) in Glendale. The officers were responding to a two-vehicle crash on the freeway near Western Avenue about 12:15 a.m. when, about 15 minutes after they arrived, a car rammed them from behind. The CHP officers, whose names have not been released, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, whose name had not been released this morning, was also taken to the hospital, where he was given a sobriety test and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
