Tim Anderson – The Periodic Table
Kevork Cholakian – Larger Than Life
May 24 – June 21, 2008

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 24th, 6 – 10 pmTim Anderson returns to Lawrence Asher with painterly aplomb presenting a spectacular new series of portraits of important characters and their compelling, rich stories. Rarely has a painter distilled such insight captured through unique color combinations and original strokes. The viewing experience is educational, inspiring and entertaining.

Kevork Cholakian channels Dutch masters through his contemporary still lifes presented in sharp, brilliant colors. His attention to detail activates all the senses and challenges our control, reach and touch. Kevork has created truly distinctive, high definition 21st century beauties, present-day still lifes.

Tim Anderson - These paintings are about people and events that have come into my world through reading, research and coincidence. The paintings are part of an exploration of human drama – all of them. Not so much good and evil, but the gray spaces in between. To get this down in paint is to trace a trajectory through a fascinating and compulsive intoxicating need to know. It is a way of laying it all out, where the process of making the marks is equally important as the end result. ~ T.A.

Tim Anderson lives and works in Chicago. Born in 1954, he has exhibited continuously since 1978 in Chicago and internationally. Anderson is one of the founders of “The Coldhouse Group”, which initiated a new and successful exhibition concept in 1987 by using abandoned cold storage warehouses and rail terminals slated for demolition as temporary exhibition halls. These shows led to an international exchange of art and artists. In 1989, he started exhibiting his paintings in Europe and continues to do so in Edinburgh, Moscow, Munich, Regensburg, Krakow, Wolfenbuttel, Italy, and Paris. From these travels, he has researched and referenced his subject matter. Anderson’s fascination with the portrait as subject matter elevates his themes to a direct confrontation with humanity. He is represented by Thomas Masters Gallery in Chicago, located at 245 West North Avenue, as well as several galleries in Europe.

Kevork Cholakian - I have always been influenced by the Early Dutch Masters: the way they used color, light and shadow to create luminous still life paintings. I choose to paint subject matter that is rich in color, texture and character of an imperfect nature. I use the juxtaposition of strong color against opposite or neutral tones to help focus full attention on each element in my work. Painting on smooth surfaces in transparent layers helps me to create subtle variations of color, luminosity and realism. Color is a central focus. Simplicity and clarity are my primary goals. ~ K.C.

Kevork Cholakian was born in 1955 and raised in the Bronx. His interest in art began at a young age, and he excelled in school art programs. At 15, he enrolled in weekend painting classes at the Art Students League. The school influenced him strongly to continue his art education which he pursued at The High School of Music and Art. Developing a strong interest in printmaking, he received many achievement awards as well as a partial scholarship to Pratt Institute where he majored in printmaking and graphic design. During his junior year, he took a summer job at CBS-TV as a graphic designer for news broadcasts. A year later, he was offered a permanent position. Kevork went on to win many design awards for his work in broadcast graphic design and animation. His interest in fine art always played a strong role. He later moved to ABC where he became creative director for ABC News. It was during this period in 1989 that Kevork began painting. The Dutch masters and American still life painters such as Raphael and James Peale influenced him heavily. Within a year he was exhibiting and selling his work. In 1996, he accepted a new position as Creative Director of Design for ABC Entertainment in Los Angeles. The demands of his new position made it difficult to keep pace with the demands of painting, but within a few years, Kevork rebuilt his garage into a studio and began painting again. His work took on new proportions, larger in scale and bolder in color than the small traditional still lifes he had painted previously in New York. His work continues to evolve and change.
