With rising temperatures, no AC and summer looming on the very near horizon, I’ve had ice cream on my mind a lot lately. There’s nothing more relieving on a hot day than clutching a cold bowl and spooning gobs of frosty deliciousness into my mouth. One of my favorite places to go is Angelato on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. I usually tend to stay away from places in ever-crowded horde magnets like the Promenade, but for Angelato I have to make an exception. Their dizzying array of gelatos and sobettos (over 100 flavors, to be exact) is enough to get you through a heat wave in hell.
They’ve got the usual chocolate, vanilla, strawberry etc. etc. flavors, if you’re looking for something traditional. Those with adventure-seeking tendencies might want to try mandarin-ginger, licorice, or lemon death gelato. They also have sorbetto (dairy free, juice based) in such tantalizing varieties as lychee, kiwi, and cantaloupe. For those with lactose and animal product issues, they have “tofulati,” a soy based creamy psuedo-gelato. There are also a variety of amusing frozen novelties available, like a real, hollowed out orange filled with orange sorbet, or a hazelnut gelato hedgehog covered in Belgian milk chocolate.
Angelato offers a few sandwiches and salads for those with more of an appetite (or maybe more self control) and a full espresso bar. The heat’s supposed to be killer this weekend, so if you find yourself on the West side, you might want to stop by Angelato’s for a much needed cool down.
