Well, you don’t have to be a weatherman to realize it’s HOT outside. But what you might not realize is that those rays aren’t as harmless as they used to me. According to the National Weather Service, the ultraviolet index level today is going to be an 11. Most likely at noon, when the sun reaches it’s highest point in the sky.
If you don’t know what “an 11″ means here is how to read ultraviolet index numbers and relate them to someone who has skin that burns easily:
- 0-2 indicates minimal exposure level. Someone with fair skin would get burnt in 30 minutes if not protected.
- 3-4 is a low exposure level. Someone with fair complexion could get burnt in 15-20 minutes.
- 5-6 is getting dangerous. You’re going to fry in 10-12 minutes unless protected.
- A very high exposure would be a 10. This means that without using sun-protection, walking in and out of the mall is enough to fry you.
- And 11 is basically off the charts and extremely violent
Recommendations. Use sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, or more importantly, stay out of the sun! All you fair skinned people out there, you’re screwed. For everyone else. Today is not the day to tan. Ultraviolet radiation is one of the main causes for health issues such as skin cancer and cataracts for ALL types of skin.
