
- San Diego Explosion injures 13 - Five people were critically injured and eight others in need of treatment after an explosion that took place this afternoon at a high-rise Hilton Hotel under construction in San Diego. Officials were not yet certain of the cause but said it may have been a gas leak. The incident occurred about 2:15 on Harbor Drive. Four floors of the hotel were damaged at one corner, with some windows and metal railings destroyed. Dozens of police and fire vehicles and ambulances raced to the scene. Police said the explosion may have taken place in a room with mechanical equipment such as heating and air-conditioning units.
- Man stabs brother in back - A 32-year-old man was in custody on Monday for allegedly stabbing his brother in the back in Murrieta. Officers were called to the 24500 block of Corte Descanso about 5:30 a.m. Saturday by a resident who said his brother had stabbed him. They arrived to find Nathan E. Delacruz holding a knife with a small blade. He immediately dropped the weapon when confronted by the officers and was taken into custody. His brother, was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center.
- Girl poisoned dog because of bad grades - A 14-year-old girl in Fullerton has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty for lethally poisoned her family’s two dogs following an argument with her parents over bad grades. Police say the girl fed her sister’s medications to a Yorkie and a larger dog Sunday night after her parents left the house. The dogs were in shock when the family returned later that night, and the pooches were rushed to a pet clinic, where they died. The girl’s name has not been released because of her age.
- Fire forces evacuation in Anaheim - A three-alarm fire early today forced the evacuation of an apartment complex in Anaheim. No one was injured, but two apartments were destroyed, along with four garages and five cars. The fire was reported shortly before 1 a.m. in a single-story complex in the 600 block of North Olive Street. Fourteen adults and four children escaped after hearing the smoke alarms. It took them about 30 minutes to put out the flames. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
- Teen assaults woman while she slept - A teenage boy was in custody for the alleged sexually assaulting a woman as she slept at 4am on Sunday. The woman’s husband awoke and chased away the attacker. The suspect apparently left behind a vehicle and police were able to identify the boy as the attacker. The boy was located around mid-day and booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of sexual assault and burglary.
- 24-year-old stabbed to death in Moreno - A man who was shot on a Moreno Valley street died later at a hospital. Juan Gonzalez, 24, of Moreno Valley, was pronounced dead at Riverside County Regional Medical Center at 9:49 p.m. Sunday. The victim was found after Moreno Valley police officers were sent to the 24000 block of Atwood Avenue about 9:15 p.m. Sunday to investigate the report of a shooting, Sgt. Dean Spivacke said. Anyone with information should call (951)955-2777.
- Man killed in Riverside crash - One of two men killed when a speeding pickup truck went airborne at a railroad crossing and slammed into a palm tree was identified Monday. John Magula, 18, of Riverside, died at the scene of the crash, which was reported about 8:40 p.m. Saturday on Jefferson Street, south of the 91 Freeway. The other fatal victim, Robert Robinson, 21, of Riverside, died at Riverside Community Hospital.
