
- Two killed and eight hurt in six shootings overnight - Six shootings last night in the San Fernando Valley left two people dead and eight wounded. The outbursts of violence over a six-hour period Tuesday night was highly unusual for the Valley. Officials said they planned a swift response to the violence, including a marked increase in police presence.
- First Shooting: Occurred in North Hollywood about 6:15 p.m. One person was found dead at Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Vanowen Street. Witnesses described it as a car-to-car shootout.
- Second Shooting: Less than an hour later people heard shots at Oxnard Street and Whitsett Avenue. One person was found dead there.
- Third Shooting: A third shooting was reported in Northridge shortly before 7 p.m. A 16-year-old boy was walking on the 8600 block of Wilbur Avenue near Napa Street when a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle drove up. The suspect emerged and shot the boy in the face and shoulder.
- Fourth Shooting: At 8:15 p.m, four people were shot and wounded on the 10100 block of Vena Avenue in Pacoima. One person was in critical condition with chest and back wounds. The other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
- Fifth Shooting: The fifth shooting was reported around 9:45 p.m. at Vaughn Street and Bromont Avenue in Pacoima. Police said the suspects drove by in a white Lexus and shot two men walking on the sidewalk; one was shot in the ankle and the other in the buttocks.
- Sixth Shooting: Reported at 11:15 p.m. at 15000 Nurmi Ave. in Sylmar. A man was shot in the arm by someone who fired from a dark-colored Honda Civic, police said. There were four suspects in the car, according to police.
- Man charged for shooting girlfriend and church carnival - Fernando Diaz Jr., 33, has been charged for shooting his ex-girlfriend and two other people at a church carnival on Saturday. Fernando Diaz Jr., 33, is accused of firing a semiautomatic rifle into the carnival at St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church on Saturday and assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. Witnesses told police that Diaz kissed his son, then took a rifle out of a tennis bag and opened fire. The ex-girlfriend was shot in the arm. A man was shot in the chest, and a bullet grazed another man’s leg.
- 13-year-old girl kidnapped and assaulted on her way to school - Police sought the public’s help on Wednesday to find a man who kidnapped and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.The girl told police she was accosted about 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 3500 block of 132nd Street while on her way to Bud Carson Middle School. The teen said a man threatened her with a knife, “shoved” her into a car and drove her to a different location, where he sexually assaulted her at gunpoint. He then drove her back to school and ordered her to get out of the car. She ran to the school and reported the incident.
- Reward offered for information on double murder -A $25,000 reward was offered on Wednesday for information that helps solve the killings of two men gunned down at an East Los Angeles car dealership. Arturo Saldana, 62, and Francisco Cereceres, 50, were shot and killed on the afternoon of March 31 at Jesse’s Auto Sales in the 5100 block of East Olympic. The men were shot “execution style” in the garage of the business. The suspects stole two vehicles, one of which was recovered. The other, which is being sought, was a four-door 2000 Jeep Cherokee, license number 5CGJ466.
- Maywood cop charged with sexual assault - A former Maywood police officer was charged today with sexually assaulting three women while he was on duty in 2006 and 2007. Ryan Allen West, 30, was arrested at his home in Riverside County and was being held on $665,000 bail. West, who was with the Maywood Police Department until March, was charged with 12 felony counts, including rape, assault by a public officer, burglary and multiple counts of sexual assault. All of the alleged crimes occurred while West was in uniform. The investigation into West began last year when one alleged victim went to a hospital and reported that she had been raped by an officer. During the investigation, two more alleged victims were discovered, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office. The alleged victims are all in their 30s.
- Brush Fire in Santa Clarita - Firefighters Wednesday battled a small brush fire in a canyon the Angeles National Forest near Santa Clarita. Forest Service spokeswoman Dee Dechert said Wednesday the blaze has consumed 10 acres, pushed along by wind gusts. The fire is less than 5 percent contained and threatening nearby homes. 100 Forest Service and county firefighters and five county helicopters are fighting the blaze, with air tankers on the way. Los Angeles County Fire spokesman Sammy Padilla says the fire started at about 3:15 p.m. when a transformer burst into flames and ignited the brush beneath it.
