Live Draw! 2008 brings together diverse talent to draw nudes in various poses in front of a live audience. It features artists such as David Schoffman, a master of life drawing, Alejandro Gehry, post-pop erotica artist and son of seminal architect Frank Gehry, and Katina Zinner, abstract painter, film editor, and daughter of Oscar-winning film editor Peter Zinner.

Artwork is priced inexpensively on the spot (ranging between $50-$200) and “bought right off the pad.” Due to the buying frenzy that often ensues, work may be purchased mid-stroke or even pre-purchased sight unseen. Some enthusiastic patrons will acquire an “entire flight”, giving them each piece (from all the artists) generated by a given pose.

At Live Draw!, viewers are given an intimate glimpse in to the creative process of the figurative artist. They will be able to compare style, technique, and interpretation as each artist approaches the subject in a unique manner. While doing so, they will enjoy complimentary tapas and fine wine by (Oops) Wines . The Live Draw! experience would also not be complete without a rich soundscape to augment the poses and create the right vibe for the audience. For Live Draw! 2008, grooves will be supplied by Sleevin Record’s talented DJ S.I.M.O.
“Live Draw! is a new twist on performance art” remarks Delia Cabral, DCA owner.  “Life drawing is a specialized skill that not all artists, even great ones, can do well,” she continues. “It’s a hidden world inhabited by artists and models coming together in small workshop spaces. Finding a way to demystify the process and expose the community at-large to the incredible talent and work produced at these sessions has been long overdue. Live Draw! is one part of that equation.” Another part of the equation is a new DCA workshop series offering instruction in both life drawing and art modeling. Live Draw! 2008 will be the launching point for the DCA workshops. More details will be forthcoming.

The diverse panel of artists at Live Draw! 2008 promises an exciting array of figurative interpretation. Returnees from previous Live Draw! events include such past favorites as David Schoffman, Bodgan Dumitrica (currently showing at DCA’s Icon exhibit), Lynn Hanson, and Fausin Mdisa.

In keeping with tradition, Schoffman, originally from Brooklyn and a local life drawing legend, will bring one of his top students (to be named) to participate. Hanson, a consistent top-seller, creates utterly unique ink and charcoal drawings rendered upon vintage maps and other alternative media. Always a crowd favorite, Mdisa dazzles onlookers as he squirts latex paint from ketchup bottles onto plexiglass and cotton paper. And Dumitrica brings expert craftsmanship to create polished, elegant drawings that despite the time constraint, has the feel of fully realized work.

Newcomers include Katina Zinner – pastel on paper, Barry Markowitz – mixed media, Gus Harper – acrylic and charcoal on canvas, and Alejandro Gehry, who introduces structural background elements in his drawings to intriguing effect.

Tickets for Live Draw! 2008 cost $45 in advance, $55 at the door. Proceeds partially benefit the arts program at SMASH (Santa Monica Malibu Alternative School House), a local K-8 school that takes a fresh approach to education by basing curriculum on student interests. The arts program at SMASH is community funded and uses working artists to instruct and make art relevant to today’s kids. “One of the primary goals for Live Draw! is to educate the community through an exciting arts event. Our relationship with SMASH will extend that educational mandate; we are thrilled to have them as our partners,” says Cabral.
