
- Man arrested on suspicion of double murder - Yesterday, six shootings were believed to be connected. Today, Avetis Vartanyan, 24, was booked today on suspicion of murdering two men in North Hollywood on Tuesday. One shooting took place at Oxnard St. and Whitsett Ave. in the parking lot of a shopping plaza. Artak Karamyan, 28, was found there wounded. A short time later, police found Paylak Harutyunyan, 29, wounded near Vanowen St. and Coldwater Canyon. Both men died. Vartanyan was detained — with the help of a police dog — a short time after the shooting while trying to leave the area. Vartanyan was placed under arrest and is being held without bail. Police recovered a pistol that they suspect Vartanyan had hidden in the yard of a home, along with a second handgun found in an abandoned vehicle at the crime scene. Nothing has been said about the other shootings.
- 1 Killed and 3 injured in South LA fire - One person died and two others were seriously injured in a fire in a South LA building on Wednesday night. The blaze broke out about 9:20 p.m. at 5720 S. Fortuna St., a small commercial building that also serves as a residence. Within 30 minutes of arriving, 30 firefighters had the fire under control. After the fire was contained, firefighters found a woman’s body. A 40-year-old man suffered burns to his arms and a 17-year-old girl complained of smoke-related problems. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The cost of the damage is still being tabulated.
- 4 Children injured in school bus crash - Four children have been injured in a collision between a school bus and a passenger car in Fontana. The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. this morning during a downpour. It wasn’t clear if the rain contributed to the crash.The driver of the car was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. Two children were taken to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana with minor injuries. Two others were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.
- Three officers injured in two car crash -Three LAPD officers and one motorist were injured Thursday in a two-car crash in Brea. The three officers were reportedly traveling west on Imperial Highway when a 2005 Nissan Frontier traveling east, driven by a 36-year-old motorist, crossed the center divider near the Orange (57) Freeway and hit the marked patrol car.The officers were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the Nissan was taken to a hospital for treatment of back pain.
- Dozens of gang members arrested in Long Beach - Several dozen alleged gang members were arrested and indicted after a three-month investigation into the illegal sales of drugs and guns. Detectives from the Long Beach Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted an undercover investigation from Jan. 15 to April 28. The investigation resulted in 26 federal indictments, 51 state indictments and multiple arrests.
- Downpour causes mudslides in OC - Torrential downpours in Southern California have prompted fire officials to order mandatory evacuations because of mudslides in three Orange County canyons scarred by last fall’s wildfires. Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion says some residents in those canyons can’t leave their homes because of Thursday’s mud and debris flows. Some houses have been damaged as well.Concepcion says debris flow has also made a road in Trabuco Canyon impassable. There have been no reports of injuries. The downpours are part a wild weather system that dusted Southern California with a rare late spring snowfall.
