Maybe it’s the weather or something but there hasn’t been a ton of really interesting music news this week. I won’t subject you to full stories on American Idol picking a champion, or Velvet Revolver trying to find a lead singer or Janet Jackson announcing a tour, but I will say stay tuned because on Friday when I have a nice list of concert on sale info. Plus, it’s finally below 115 degrees outside, woo hoo!
Forget hot plays, Coldplay is touring!
As they prepare to release their fourth studio album “Viva La Vida”, Coldplay has announced an upcoming summer arena tour. Before you L.A. locals start padding your bank accounts in anticipation of tickets (do you really need more throw pillows from Bed, Bath and Beyond? I think not) there has been no Southern California dates announced… yet (a week’s gap between Phoenix and Las Vegas shows should hold a few Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Diego dates in store). For our national readers: first off, hello, secondly the tour begins June 29th in Philadelphia, with a pre-tour free show at Madison Square Garden in New York (apparently you can gain access through www.coldplay.com). For our international readers: you can catch Coldplay headlining the Summer Sonic festival in Japan in July. Finally, for our Extraterrestrial readers: congratulations! You’ve just been recognized by the Vatican.
Scarlett Johansson Releases Debut Album
Look… if Scar Jo wants to sing, Scar Jo can sing. It’s just more proof that if your really, really hot then the world is your oyster. Lost In Translation star, and Jesus and Mary Chain background vocalist, Scarlett Johannson has released her debut album “Anywhere I Lay My Head”, a collection of songs from the Tom Waits catalog. And while Ms. Johannson and Mr. Waits seem to go together, at least on paper, like peanut butter and mayonnaise, she does have enough indie cred to at least make you interested. The album has received mixed to mediocre reviews, with the website What Would Tyler Durdan Do putting forth probably the best single line review I have ever read.
R. Kelly Trial Starts
If I remember correctly, sometime between the Jurassic and Triassic period (or for all you people who want actual “facts”: 2002), R&B star R. Kelly was charged with having sex with a underage child and videotaping it (perhaps you recall this from the Chapelle’s Show opus “Piss On You”). Now, about six years later (talk about a fast track), the trial of one Robert (R.) Kelly has began in a Chicago.
First week highlights included opening statements and a full viewing of the graphic video, which allegedly shows Mr. Kelly having full intercourse with a thirteen year old girl. Legal professional types have stated that the prosecution faces many challenges in this case, having to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that not only Mr. Kelly is the one committing the acts in the video, but that the alleged victim that the Prosecution has identified is actually the one in the tape (both claims are disputed by the defense). Stay tuned…
