Valley Greek Festival - Something Different for Memorial Day Weekend

May 23rd, 2008 Written by: Jaime Lopez· 1 Comment

Lokmathes by jamesjosephimagesMost people will probably be gearing up for some BBQ this weekend, but if you’re like me, take heed of the banners hanging on lamposts in the Valley because the Memorial Day Weekend rings in a 3 day Greek Festival! Starting on the 24th, St Nicholas’ church in Northridge will be hosting the 35th annual event packed with all manner of the usual cultural happenings, from live music to dancing to various boutiques. Of course, the most important aspect of the Valley Greek Festival has to be the FOOD. Why? Because Greek food is so fucking good.

Rich feta cheese, Gyros, Dolmas (those tangy, creamy, rice-filled grape leaves) and all the flavors of Greece will be displayed as clear, bright and indulgent as a bowl of olive oil, lemon juice and thick yogurt. Clearly I don’t know much more about the specifics of Greek cuisine, so the festival is a great way to go and sample just about anything. Best of all, admission is FREE and, according to their website, “The women of the church have graciously prepared 14 varieties of more than 48,000 pastries. In addition, loucoumathes, also known as Greek doughnuts, will be freshly prepared and there will be plenty of Greek coffee to accent the sweets.”

You have to be kidding me.

I know it doesn’t have much to do with remembering our fallen soldiers, but eating homemade Greek doughnuts and pastries prepared by church women sounds like a lovely way to spend the day reflecting on the life, freedom and happiness that is, hopefully, still available to all of us.

I just came back from the event! (Well, like two hours ago; it was cold out.) I am stuffed with gyros, calamari, and chocolate baklava. Stuffed. The music was great - and it was rad watching people of all ages dance with each other. A definite tradition.
