
- Shooting leaves 14-year-old girl on life support -A 16-year-old boy is being held in connection with a gang-related shooting in Highland Park. The boy, whose name had not been released, was standing at York Blvd. and North Avenue 64 at about 3:15 p.m on Monday when the shooting occurred. Fabian Aguirre, 33, of Highland Park, driving a pickup truck, stopped at a red light at the intersection and the two began to exchange words. The boy pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Aguirre and the girl, who was riding in the back of an SUV next to Aguirre’s pickup. Aguirre was struck once in each arm and the girl was shot in the head. She has showed no signs of brain activity and is now on life-support.
- Robbery suspect shot - An attempted armed robbery suspect was shot by a plainclothes detective who witnessed the robbery, near Pacific Coast Highway and Daisy Ave.. The detective followed the suspect to the 600 block of West PCH, about a block away, where the officer-involved shooting occurred. The unidentified suspect, who was shot several times, was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known. Although the suspect was reported to have a handgun, it was unclear if a weapon was recovered at the scene.
- The man who caused Metrolink crash says he was trying to kill himself - Juan Manuel Alvarez testified today that he only intended to kill himself, not others, when he drove his SUV onto the railroad tracks three years ago. He then apologized for causing the wreck, which killed 11 train passengers and injured 180 others. “I feel terrible and I ask for forgiveness,” Alvarez said. “I believe some of the family members are here today. I am sorry for what happened; I never meaned to hurt anyone. That could have been my mom or my dad.” The issue of whether the 29-year-old Compton man willfully set out to derail a train, commit arson and maim and kill people is at the core of arguments at his trial. If convicted of first-degree murder, Alvarez could face the death penalty.
- Four teens arrested after gunshots hit a Sheriff’s helicopter - Four people, including three juveniles, have been arrested in connection with an incident in Carson last week in which a LA County Sheriff’s Department helicopter was hit with gunfire. Martin Guidino, 23, of Carson was arrested on suspicion of shooting into an occupied aircraft, he faces felony charges. Three juveniles, whose names were not released, also were arrested for their alleged role as accessories to the crime.
