The Sex Pistols To Save Britney Spears: Hmmmmm… how to write a lead for this. Remember when the Sex Pistols were punk before there really was a punk rock? “God Save The Queen.” “Anarchy In The UK.” Safety pins. Songs about aborted fetuses? Yeah, those guys. Well, according to hollywood.tv, Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Lydon (aka Rotten) wants to put all of his punk rock efforts behind a collaboration that will most certainly figure someplace in the apocalypse (somewhere between the third horseman and the river of fire): a collaboration with Britney Spears.
According to the article Lydon empathizes with the former Ms. Federline’s personal problems (”Problems… problems… problems”) and says that he is inspired to collaborate with the singer. “I haven’t written a song for Britney yet but I would love to,” states Lydon. “I’d like to help out because there’s a girl who needs some help. She’s been hurt. And hurt is the root essence of good music.” Britney Spears singing Johnny Rotton lyrics? It sounds so good it must be fattening. While I wouldn’t hold my breath on this collaboration occuring anytime soon, tell me you wouldn’t crawl over broken glass to hear this one.
Sigur Ros Album Release: Rejoice fans, it’s almost time to pour some Sigur on it. After a few long winters between studio releases, Icelandic experimental rockers Sigur Ros are putting the finishing touches on their new studio album for a June 24th release on XL Records. I wonder how you say “Highly Anticipated” in Hopelandic? Probably something like “Gooplani Noob Es A Soobanpi Ne Uoostiant.” However you say it in lead singers Jón Thor Birgisson made up tongue, the bands new album, titled Með suð à eyrum við spilum endalaust (or “With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly” for you non- Icelandic speakers out there) should feature the same experiental song structures, keyboards, strings, bells and whistles that Sigur Ros fan’s are used, plus a few new twists that keep the band both fresh and vital. One of these said twists includes Mr. Birgisson ditching Hopelandic and singing true Icelandic on most of the new songs. He even sings in English for one of the new tracks. The albums opening track “Goobledigook” will be available for download from the bands website starting this afternoon.
Sonic Youth Rocks Starbucks: Would you like some experimental alternative-rock with your soy-non-fat latte? Seminal New York noise-rockers Sonic Youth will release a celebrity and musician selected greatest hits album through Universal Special Markets and Starbucks Entertainment. In other words, when you wander into Starbucks for your favorite drink (my personal poison recently is a iced non-fat double shot espresso drink with two splendas) you can also walk out with a pretty solid CD full of Sonic Youth tunes.
The tracklist:
- “Bull in the Heather” selected by Catherine Keener
- “100%” selected by Mike D
- “Sugar Kane” selected by Beck
- “Kool Thing” selected by Radiohead
- “Disappearer” selected by Portia De Rossi
- “Superstar” selected by Diablo Cody
- “Stones” selected by Allison Anders
- “Tuff Gnarl” selected by Dave Eggers and Mike Watt
- “Teenage Riot” selected by Eddie Vedder
- “Shadow of a Doubt” selected by Michelle Williams
- “Rain on Tin” selected by Flea
- “Tom Violence” selected by Gus Van Zant
- “Mary-Christ” selected by David Cross
- “World Looks Red” selected by Chloe Sevigny
- “Expressway to Yr Skull” selected by Flaming Lips
- “Slow Revolution” exclusive new Sonic Youth recording
All corporate bull shitting aside, this is a great business idea. I know Starbucks is not good for local business and all that stuff, but with the record industry as shitty as it is right now, any new business model for getting your name out there and selling CD’s should be explored. Plus, Sonic Youth and Starbucks do kinda sound like a good fit. But could I somehow get the CD with extra caramel?
Kinky, The Ravonettes Make Music For Pasadena: If you happened to read Pitchfork’s recent article outlining all the music festivals going on around the world, your probably thinking two things:
1) Wow, there are a lot of festivals and 2) Man, Vampire Weekend must be getting bomb frequent flyer miles. Well, with all the festivals dotting this great planet in the next few months, it would only make sense that there should be something to look forward to in Los Angeles. The Make Music Pasadena festival will take place on June 21st and will take place in various locations in downtown Pasadena. Headlining the music and arts festival will be Kinky (who, for my money, puts on one of the best live shows in rock music), The Ravonettes, Nortec Collective and many, many others. The festival is free to all and you can check the website for more details.
