Cayetana Conrad, “Ondines”, New Oil Paintings
June 1 â July 11, 2008
Opening Reception:Â Sunday, June 1, 6-9pm
Cayetana Conrad continues her visual exploration of Southern California in Ondines, the Swimming Pool Paintings opening at Bergamot Station’s Frank Pictures Gallery on Sunday, June 1st. In this series which began with her highly successful 2006 show at Frank Pictures, The Language of Youth, Conrad exhibits an intuitive feel for both the water’s silky surface and the unsettling sense of what lies beneath it. Her web-like grids, connected by light, shatter the swimmer’s form into an explosion of shape, to evoke not only the energy and geometry of the scene, but its psycho-social forces as well. By using swimming pools as her focus, the paintings in this series are an astounding fresh take on a particular lifestyle and ideology, while referencing centuries of landscape painting from Maxfield Parrish through the Impressionists, the Cubists and Hockney. Conrad, a native Californian is the daughter of renowned writer, painter, teacher and bullfighter, Barnaby Conrad.
