Eating well in Los Angeles can be a daunting task, fraught with expanding waistlines and shrinking wallets. There are several “hole in the wall” restaurants to be found, but there are times when a table, let alone a tablecloth, would be appreciated. You may have to eat on off nights, but a visit to one of the restaurants below will not disappoint.

For ecologically-minded (as well as financially conscious) foodies, Sunday Suppers at Lucques is like purchasing a nonstop ticket to nirvana. When Sunday Suppers at Lucques is booked solid (as they frequently do), head west to Violet in Santa Monica. $25 will buy you a three course meal, and for $35 you can add a “bottomless” glass of wine. With entrees normally averaging between $26 and $42, the $35 three course prixe fixe dinner at Jiraffe is the next best thing to a trip to France. Diners have a choice between two appetizers and entrees, followed by a dessert that could be anything from bread and butter pudding to black pepper ice cream. Wine carafes are also discounted. At $55 for three courses and five wines, Hollywood restaurant Lou offers what I consider to be the best deal in town for a Monday night. The revolving list of entrees, which frequently includes one bacon product or another, is accompanied by a flight of wines chosen to compliment your main course. Don’t need the food, just the wine? Lou also has Tasting Tuesdays, where they pour a new flight each week. 724 Vine Street, Hollywood, 323.962.6369
