June 1 – July 12, 2008
Opening Reception:  Friday, June 6, 6-9pm

“ROBOTANICALS” is a collection of mixed media paintings by internationally recognized artist Michael Mew.  This exhibition, which juxtaposes Mew’s interest in flora and science, marks his second solo show at the Deborah Page Gallery.
Michael Mew is an Oakland based artist who has exhibited work throughout the United States and Europe. His work has recently traveled with the Bridge Art Fair to London and Miami.  Mew has also exhibited in Paris and Bath, England. our pieces from Mew’s “Robots Gone Bad” series are currently on show at the San Jose Museum of Art in, “Robots:  Evolution of a Cultural Icon.”  His Robot 4 was critically acclaimed and Mew proclaimed, “an Oakland artist who is a real find.” Mew’s work will also be featured in Lisa Cyr’s much-anticipated book, “Art Revolution.” (Release date, June 2009)

His large works on panel are composed of appropriated and imagined images using collage and paint, and sealed with resin.  The artist’s interest in science, astronomy, world religions, and alchemy are apparent. Of his work, Mew says, “My amalgamation of images comes from an untidy place in my subconscious. On the surface it appears that I pick images at random but in fact they interrelate on many levels in many places, and then not at all in others. My interest in surrealism allows this loose association to be acceptable and even desirable to my working process.”

Opening party Friday, June 6 from 6-9 p.m. at the gallery.  Cocktails provided by Lotus Vodka.
