Your grandparents ate here. They sat in the back booth and “canoodled”, tossing sugar packets up at the vent to make them stick. Actually, maybe that last part was me and my theater friends in highschool, but either way Dupar’s has been the beloved hangout for all types for a long, long time. 1938 to be exact! I was introduced to Dupar’s by my grandfather who was somehow associated with their Bearclaw pastries. Not sure whether it was because he always ate them when we went there, or if he would bring them by for us to eat, I just remember the freshly warmed, throat-shuddering, almond-paste pastry swept generously with pads of cold butter. I also remember the Date Nut bread, equally adorned with a healthy amount of softly spread butter. That’s Dupar’s to me. And of course they still sell them, exactly the same as I remember. It’s a place you can shuffle in at 2 pm for a big post-hangover diner breakfast, or stagger in at 2am for chocolate malts and french fries before you shuffle back in the next day for … you get the idea. The have fantastic, buttery hash brown, lovely pies and surprisingly good coffee in really cool, heavy mugs. All the stuff you need for late-night comfort food.
Chances are you know Dupars, they also have their infamous store at the Farmer’s Market on 3rd. If you’re a Valley local, it’s nice to know you dont’ have to make the trek all the way over the hill anytime you’re cravin’ some guilty pleasure greasy spoon. I quite prefer it to Canter’s, as a matter of fact. Less hectic and better food. Plus the waitresses are spectacular. Some of them undoubtedly blinking with wonder as to how the summer job of 1945 suddenly turned into 2008.
