Along with “The Girls Next Door” reruns, “Pretty Woman” and “The Bachelor Marathon,” the 2008 MTV Movie Awards are available on Sunday night at 8 p.m. on MTV, for your viewing pleasure. Hosted by funny man Mike Meyers, whose got new movie “The Love Guru” to promote, this year’s festivities will include Jack Black, Steve Carell, Tom Cruise, Will Ferrell, Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Will Smith, Ben Stiller, Liv Tyler, Rainn Wilson and many more. Coldplay, who will be releasing their fourth studio album, Viva La Vida on June 12, 2008, will be performing, along with The Pussycat Dolls, who have their upcoming second album to release soon.
The awards will be airing live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, and for the second year in a row, are being produced by Emmy winning producer Mark Burnett, who was responsible for airing last year’s show live as well, after years of airing a pre-recorded broadcast to audiences across the nation.
Categories include Best Comedic Performance, Best Female and Male performance, Best Kiss, Best Villain, Best Fight, Breakthrough Performance and as always, Best Movie.
This year, “Superbad” has led the pack with the most nominations (5) followed by “Juno” with four and blockbuster movies “Enchanted,” “Transformers,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Knocked Up” following with three nominations each.
The Movie Awards pulled in over 20 million viewers last year and producers hope to top that number this time around. One other unusual category is Best Summer Movie So Far, which show cases films that were released in the last few weeks this year. This seems a bit odd as awards shows usually aim to give awards to movies that were released in the previous year. Nominees for the Best Summer Movie So Far include The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Iron Man, Speed Racer and Sex and the City.
Tune in on Sunday, June 1st at 8 p.m. for a taste of what the Golden Popcorn has to offer.
