- Universal backlots destroyed by fire - A fire whose cause remains unknown has destroyed a portion of the backlots at Universal Studios. The fire began at 4:30 a.m. and spread eagerly throughout the New York Street backlot area, the courthouse square from “Back to the Future” and the King Kong exhibit building. There were 400 firefighters trying to put out the blaze, and although three were injured, the injuries are considered to be minor. The MTV Movie Awards that are set to take place tonight at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal City will go on as scheduled, despite the fire. Air quality officials are warning residents who live near to avoid breathing in the smoke caused by the blaze.
- Shooting in Van Nuys - A shooting that occurred on Woodley Avenue in Van Nuys resulted in one man being killed and another wounded. The man taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center was declared dead, Los Angeles police Sgt. Don Muniz of the Van Nuys Station said. No details about the names of the two men or other information was available.
- 4-year-old killed after alleged beating - The Associated Press has reported a Santa Ana mother and her boyfriend have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the woman’s 4-year-old boy died. Police officers who arrived at the couple’s apartment Friday found the boy in full cardiac arrest along with bruises and head trauma. The boy’s two siblings were at home and may have witnessed the beating. The mother and her boyfriend are being held on $1 million bail. The other children have been placed in protective custody.
- Stevenson Ranch man killed on Freeway - Antonio Galvan Jr., 28, died when his car drove off the 5 Freeway in Sylmar and ended up in a motel parking lot, authorities said. The cause of the crash is unknown, however Galvan was ejected from his vehicle, Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said. His car landed in a Motel 6 parking lot at Roxford and the 405 Freeway, Officer David porter of the California Highway Patrol said.
