MLS: Identical Score, Opposite Results For L.A. Teams

June 2nd, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago· No Comments

lagalaxy08-06-02Both the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA teams had intense activity over the weekend during Week 10 of the Major League Soccer. The score in both their games was an identical 2-0. Unfortunately for the Galaxy, the score was not in their favor. On the other hand, Chivas USA’s strong performance allowed them to obtain the victory.

It all started on Saturday in Canada where the Galaxy visited a young Toronto FC team. A win for Los Angeles would assure them of the top spot in the Western Conference. Unfortunately for them, Toronto FC came in with a plan to spoil the party.

A nice header by Julius James opened the score for Toronto FC in the 49th minute. The Canadians dominated the game and in the 65th minute the second goal arrived. This time Jeff Cunningham was the man in charge to beat Galaxy goalie Steve Cronin with a nice strike inside the box.

With this loss, the Galaxy now relinquishes the top spot to the Colorado Rapids in the Western Conference. Los Angeles is second with 14 points and a (4-4-2) record.

Also on Saturday, but about 2,000 miles Southwest, Chivas USA received the Columbus Crew at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The game was very much decided in less than two minutes when Jorge Flores and Jesse Marsch both scored in the 20th and 21st minute respectively. To make matters worse for the visitors, Columbus defender Danny O’Rourke was ejected from the game a minute after the second goal due to a dangerous foul. After the man advantage, it was all Chivas on the field and the game was controlled with ease.

This is the third win in a row for Chivas as they are steadily rising in the conference. They are now third in the West just behind the Galaxy.

Curiously, both L.A. teams have an identical number of points and record. The only variance is the better goal difference that the Galactic team contains.

Next week Chivas will travel East as they visit the New York Red Bulls in a Thursday night match-up. On the other hand, Galaxy will receive the Colorado Rapids on Saturday where a battle for first place in the Western Conference will unfold.
