On Sunday, parts of the Universal Studios back-lot were burnt down in a fire caused by unknown reasons. Yesterday they re-opened the part and decided to make something out of the event. Instead of closing down the sections of the Tram Ride which were burnt down, they took site-seers right up to the scene of the incident. Fire-fighters are still hosing down the rubble and investigators are looking for clues to what happened.
People go on the tram ride to see where their favorite films were shot, what’s stopping them from doing the same now? At this point it is still unclear if they will rebuild the sets or simply let them stay as is. After all, could the fire of 2008 not be as much a part of the sets history as the filming itself? Perhaps it even adds to the allure. With all the fake worlds you drive through the new burnt down buildings almost seem to blend into everything else.
Tourists who ride the tram this week get to literally see history in the making. As they drove past the wreckage, they were encouraged to take photos and were driven directly right through the town for the best views.
“You can see the destruction left in the wake of the fire,” the guide said Monday. “Some of the world’s greatest firefighters descended on Universal.”
Visitors applauded.
“We’re going to take you right up next to the devastated part of our lot and give you a close-up,” said the guide.
The guide prodded the group into action at the wreckage scene, as if it were another movie set on display. “Go ahead, by the way; use your camera equipment as you see fit,” he said. “Take as many photos or video footage as you want.”
Although I’m surprised no one hasn’t had an asthma attack from the fried buildings yet? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
