Bonni Reid and Cameron Tiede at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery : June 6 â June 29, 2008
Bonni Reid - “Bone Orchard” (Artwork featured right): Reid’s artwork feels like it could be the cover for a new Edgar Allen Poe book. Reid likes to look are the darker side of life and explore the the imagination from a nightmarish perspective. Although the deadpan attitude that accompanies seems to add a new spin on the idea and add a sense of wonder to the macabre.
“Trees like bones, skulls like fruit, organs like flowers, branches like veins - where live things die and dead things grow. A place that while very real in what it describes, can only be an impossibility when taken literally by its fanciful phraseology. This seemed to be the very place where my images bore their own fruit, further connotating this strange nowhere-land where the similarities of design in nature, resemblance between all organic things, whether anatomical, botanical, or even zoological, come together.
“Somehow in this bone orchard everything is both mortal and immortal, yet all the same thing. And within these similarities lie questions, puzzles, possibilities that form playful nightmares, tricks of the eye - a natural surreality. Yet at the same time it convinces me that there can be no deceitful juxtaposition of imagery in this place and that the surreal is everywhere and all around. Because, really - that’s life.” - Bonni Reid
Cameron Tiede - “Analog Punch” (Artwork featured left).
Tiede’s work is in many ways as contrary to Reid’s as one can get. His use of energetic colors, jump from his work in an almost playful manner, surrounded by hand-made frames. Described as “illuminated innocence,” his work is as playful as it is honest, and is exhibited and collected around the world. His simple goal is to have people smile when viewing his work.
So instead of walking home depressed you can simply leave confused and introspective with these two artists in mind. Both leave lasting impression but in two very different ways.
You can view their works at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery.
