Summer TV Guide for the Week

June 9th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

TV 20080607 Summer rerun season is upon us and now the workweek is much harder to survive.

Nevermore are we able to go home and relax with our favorite shows in primetime, forced to wait several long months for their return whilst sloughing through the same episode repeated again and again throughout the dog days. Facing such a grim outlook causes many to turn to DVDs or even commit the unthinkable act of turning of the TV altogether.

Well pick up that remote, Sparky: All is not lost. There’s still plenty of great new programs and other you may have missed to be found around your dial. They may be hard to find, but the following road map for the week should will help you discover the best of television for work nights. So here it is, Monday-Thursday and Sunday.

Monday

Fans of reality competition shows will find their Xanadu on Monday evening. No fewer than five such programs air new episodes this night. On ABC there’s a two-hour “Bachelorette” featuring a singing contest. Kind of like “American Idol” with even less talent.

If you prefer a little more talent in your singing competition, look no further than two-hour “Nashville Star” on NBC at nine, or flip over to MTV for an all-new episode of “Legally Blonde” at ten and find out who’s going to get a step closer to playing Elle Woods on Broadway.

There’s also competition of a more physical nature available. “The Mole” returns at 10:00 on ABC from a several-decades hiatus with a group of people trying to discover a saboteur, and the revival of “American Gladiator” continues on NBC at 8:00.

If reality competitions aren’t your thing, check out the chilling documentary series “I Survived” on Bio at 9:00. This edition features interviews with survivors of the Virginia Tech Massacre.

Tuesday

Tuesday night is all about the Lakers. Check ‘em out at 6:00 on ABC. The game should run through 9:00 and by that time alcohol will prohibit fans from watching any TV.

Wednesday

There isn’t a tremendous amount of new programming on humpday and one look at the schedule reveals why: Everybody must be afraid to compete with NBC’s “Celebrity Circus”. If you’ve ever wanted to see Peter Brady attempt to walk the high wire, tonight is your chance!

Thursday

Another Lakers night, but if you’ve sobered up enough to find the power button on your remote by 10:00, definitely check out CBS’ brand-new scripted series “Swingtown”. It deals with the wife-swapping, Quaalude-popping ways of 70s suburbia and featured a pilot worthy of HBO or Showtime. The premiere drew very good ratings for the summer and showed the promise of developing into a high-quality hit.

Sunday

This Sunday is absolutely loaded.

For the sports fan, you can check out the U.S. Open from noon-six on NBC and watch Tiger Woods run over the field on one leg. Immediately after the last putt is holed, flip over to ABC and catch Game 5 of the Lakers/Celtics, assuming Boston doesn’t sweep the series.

Sunday is also Broadway’s biggest night with the 62nd Annual Tony Awards airing on taped-delay at 8:00. Patrick Stewart and Laurence Fishburne will duke it out for Best Actor in a play. Other nominees include “Roseanne” alum Laurie Metcalf and TV mainstay Bobby Cannavale. Quick preditctions for the two big categories: Best Play goes to Pulitzer Prize winner “August: Osage County” and the Latino-themed “In The Heights” takes home Best Musical.

Comedy fans have much upon which to feast as well. “SNL” goes primetime with “The Best of Mike Myers” giving people a chance to remember when he was funny and not “The Love Guru”. Showtime offers up a mini-marathon of “Weeds” offering fans one last chance to enjoy the series before it jumps the shark with next week’s season premiere.

Remember to check back every Monday morning with your guide through the week’s TV Jungle.
