- 52-year-old woman killed by police at traffic light - A 52-year-old woman was fatally shot by a CHP officer late Tuesday after allegedly brandishing what appeared to be a handgun during a traffic stop. CHP officers saw the woman speeding at about 11 p.m. and had her exit the freeway and pull over at Garfield and Hellman avenues of the 10 Freeway.When the CHP officers attempted to talk to the driver, she pointed what looked like a handgun at them. “She brandished it in a menacing manner. So, fearful of their life, they took action.” At least one of the officers fired at the woman, who was wounded in the chest, and she was then taken to a hospital where she died.The weapon was later determined to be fake. No CHP officers were injured in the shooting.
- Three teens held for murder of 14-year-old boy - Three teenage boys are being held today in the death of Jonathan Mendez, a 14-year-old San Juan Capistrano boy who was struck in the head with a large piece of concrete during an apparent gang altercation. Mendez died late Friday after being dropped at the ambulance bay of Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. The car he was in, witnesses told police, had significant damage to the windshield on its passenger side. The vehicle sped away, but the license number was recorded. So far it has been found that two groups of teenagers — one from San Juan Capistrano, the other from San Clemente — got into a fight and Mendez, they believe, was injured when a large piece of concrete was thrown at the car.
- Judge put sexually explicit photos on web - Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is presiding over the Los Angeles trial under a program in which appellate judges occasionally handle District Court trials, distributed sexually explicit photos over the internet. The Times reported on its Web site Wednesday that the material posted on Kozinski’s site included a photo of naked women on all fours painted to look like cows and video of a half-dressed man cavorting with a farm animal as well as other pictures.
- Man in Inglewood hospitalized after picking up rattlesnake - A 22-year-old man was recovering this morning after he was bitten by a rattlesnake at an Inglewood park. Apparently they man thought the snake, found in Edward Vincent Park, was harmless and picked it up and it then bit him twice. The man attempted to drive himself to the hospital, became ill and called 911 about 9:45 p.m., Garcia said. Police and Los Angeles County fire paramedics found the man and took him and the snake, which he had placed in a bucket, to Centinela Hospital Medical Center. The staff determined what sort of antivenin to use to treat the man. The snakebite victim was listed in good condition this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
- Two hikers found died of natural causes - The two men, both in their 70s, disappeared during a planned three-day hike in the Desolation Wilderness Area west of Lake Tahoe. A helicopter pilot discovered the body of Thomas A. Hylton, 70, of Lincoln, Calif., last Friday at the pair’s campsite near Eagle Lake who died of a heart attack. A day later, search teams found the body of Jerome B. Smith, 78, about a half-mile from the campsite, and an autopsy determined his death was caused by moderate injuries and a night spent in below-freezing weather. Investigators believe that after Hylton’s heart attack, Smith left the camp the night of June 2 to seek help, fell down a rocky hillside, was injured and died overnight in temperatures in the mid-20s.
