The Port of LA: Whitney Port Delivers the Goods

June 13th, 2008 Written by: Jasmine Johnson· 1 Comment

whitneyport08-06-13Life isn’t fair. Just ask Whitney Port, reality star-cum-budding fashion designer. What can wealth, beauty, and a Bachelor’s degree get you in 2008? Apparently a spot on an uber popular reality show, internships that require no discernible skill but include multiple trips to France, the cover of Rolling Stone, and a line of over-priced clothes placed in boutiques your coeds won’t be able to frequent for several years. No, for some life simply isn’t fair.

MTV struck gold with The Hills, and its stars are cashing in their doubloons to fulfill fantasies that would normally take decades to execute. Though not as shameless as her co-stars (I’m looking at you, Spencer and Heidi), Whitney Port is using her time wisely, capitalizing on her resources and launching a line of contemporary party digs named Whitney Eve. While the rest of us work our way up ladders that lead to jobs we’ll eventually resent (Except me – in case my boss is reading this – because I absolutely adore my job. Really.), twenty three-year-old Whitney Eve Port is living her dream. Now.

Wednesday night I found myself at the Whitney Eve trunk show. I entered the small studio on Melrose, expecting nothing since I’d had no previous experience with trunk shows (I’ll be honest, I had to Wiki “trunk show” Tuesday night), and found the event intimate and fairly un-Hollywood. The staff, Whitney’s family, was nice and more than accommodating. I chatted with her mother and talked with her sister about her future wedding plans. And I was completely enamored with close family friend who, without pretense, talked at length about the charity work she does with the Children’s Hospital. So caught up with these lovely people I was, that I didn’t even notice when Lauren Conrad and Lauren Bosworth (Lo) sauntered in and blended in with the crowd.

The clothes, the reason for my being there, were better than I expected. Unlike her Hills co-stars, Whitney has managed to produce a line of clothes that have character. Personally, I prefer more forgiving fabrics, cuts that allow me to wear a bra, and hemlines that won’t make sitting on a movie theater seat a gross misadventure. But that’s personal preference. There is an entire market of women here in LA who would gladly pay $125.00 for a dress that isn’t functional, yet bares the name Whitney Eve.

Her line won’t be available in stores until August and she doesn’t have a website yet, but high-end shops including Fred Siegel and Kitson will be carrying Whitney Eve in the fall.

Life isn’t fair kids. And Whitney Port isn’t complaining one bit.

LOL!! You make me laugh. It’s nice to see a REAL person cover something like this.
