A Fresh Breakfast, Ooh la la!

Hermitage 20080615After a weekend of excess, as far as my eating had gone, I was looking for a Sunday brunch a bit classier yet still casual; I was, after all, wearing my bathing suit under my dress. I also wanted something on the healthier side. For once, I wanted less grease, more nutrients. I didn’t have to venture far from home to find exactly what I was looking for at Bistro de L’Hermitage in Culver City. The cozy outdoor patio (well-disguised sidewalk seating) was crowded, but there was no wait for our table. The specials are scrawled on chalkboards, the indoor dining room is tiny, and the wait staff is warm and friendly. For a French Bistro, the prices are quite reasonable.

In the interest of being refreshed this particular morning, I traded my usual Bloody Mary for a glass of orange juice, which came, to my absolute delight, freshly squeezed in a wine glass. Maybe I’ve grown jaded by cartons of Tropicana, but the juice was delicious. I’d forgotten how fresh squeezed juice could make a morning seem productive. The juice was accompanied by a basket of fresh baguettes, butter and jam.

For my entree I created my own three-ingredient omelets of Spinach, Mushrooms and Goat Cheese. Each selection comes with your choice of breakfast potatoes or fresh fruit, as well as an organic green salad.During the short wait I enjoyed the gorgeous weather and pulpy juice. My omelet was incredible, truly. I’d worried there wouldn’t be enough goat cheese or the mushrooms would be rubbery but everything was perfect, and despite its size I nearly finished the whole thing. The salad was actually a great accompaniment, with Dijon vinaigrette, it was light and refreshing. The fruit tasted ripe and fresh, and they didn’t skimp on the berries either!

I cannot wait to go back there for lunch and dinner,as I really do love a great French Bistro. For my attempt at a lighter Brunch, L’Hermitage was a wonderful choice, and right in the heart of Culver City, they’ve disguised themselves well, as this morning felt quite European. Their outdoor patio is also a great place for people watching. Our charming Brunch for two came to about $30.
