  • LAPD search for fugitive who shot wife and ran of with their 2 sons - Police spoke with Jose Luis Ortega, 27, who allegedly shot his wife and kidnapped their 3- and 5-year-old sons, but were unable to find him and the man still remains at large man. Ortegaallegedly shot his wife a dozen times around 10:45 a.m. Sunday when they got into an argument. He fled with the boys in a 1998 black Ford Ranger pickup truck that was found about 11:10 p.m. His wife, who is in her 20s, was able to say who the shooter was, and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Late Sunday night, investigators called Ortega’s cell phone number and he answered, told police his wons were unharmed and hung up.
  • Police kill man who beat baby to death - A Turlock man was fatally shot by police as he kicked, punched and stomped a young toddler to death in front of horrified motorists. Investigators are still unclear what the relationship between the 27-year-old suspect and the dead child.  “It’s been a long night of wondering why, not only for the officers and the passers-by who stopped and tried to help out, but for anyone.” The suspect had a child’s car seat in the back of his four-door pickup truck. As witnesses approached they saw the man brutally beating the toddler. Two or three other cars stopped and tried to help. A sheriff’s helicopter responding to emergency calls from the area shot the man after an order to stop beating the child. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was not breathing when they arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

  • Murder suicide in Carson McDonalds - A man and a woman were found dead at the scene about 3:15 p.m. Sunday in the 17400 block of Central Avenue, near the 91 Freeway, Deputy Oscar Butao said. Witnesses said the two arguing in a vehicle just before the woman got out and ran toward the restaurant yelling “He’s going to kill me,” KNBC-TV Channel 4 reported. The man then allegedly followed her into the fast-food restaurant, shot her, then turned the gun on himself, witnesses told the television station. The motive for the shooting was not immediately known.
  • OC man dies in diving accident on Catalina - Authorities Monday identified Tim Hatch, a 31-year-old from Costa Mesa, as the man who died diving off the coast of Santa Catalina Island. Hatch failed to surface Saturday afternoon while swimming off the southwest-facing side of the island.  “When he didn’t come back, we though he was playing around at first,” his father, Bob Hatch, 56, told the newspaper. “Then I jumped in a minute later. I got into the water and tried to see, but I didn’t have any goggles.”  Lifeguards who helped recover the body said Hatch may have experienced “shallow water blackout,” which is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain.
  • Firefighters beginning to control wildfire in Riverside -Nearly 120 firefighters are battling an early-morning blaze that has grown to 75 acres in a matter of hours in eastern Riverside County. Cal Fire Capt. Jennifer Ricci says the fire was reported about 1 a.m. Monday in the hills above Banning, north of Interstate 10. She says no injuries have been reported and no structures “immediately threatened.”  Aircraft will be joining the ground crews at daylight to fight the flames.
