You may have survived the first week of summer TV season unscathed, but there’s still a long way to go, and with the Lakers collapse of last Thursday you may have lost all hope.
Don’t despair mon frere, it may seem tough to find the jewels in this sea of summer re-runs, but luckily, you’ve found a guide to lead you to the summer TV gems. So if you’ve managed to shock yourself back into reality after the Lakers’ stupefying loss of the previous week, be sure to check out some of the best bets listed below.
Tuesday
With a win on Sunday, Tuesday remains Lakers night. See if they can survive game 6 in Boston and take the series to the greatest thing in sports: Game 7.
If you’re not into sports, AFI offers its annual summertime list treat for movie fans. This year, they’re offering up “Ten Top Tens” with the ten best Westerns, Sci-Fi movies and eight other categories. The special runs from 8-11 on CBS.
Wednesday
Wednesday is about as dry as a Salt Lake City tavern. Again, this could be rival programmers’ fear of the juggernaut “Celebrity Circus”, airing at 9:30 on NBC, but remember that “Farmer Wants a Wife” is also on this night at 9:00, so who knows?
With the lack of programming, Wednesday feels like a movie night and HBO is offering up a big hit from last summer you may have missed. “Hairspray” is on at 8 o’clock, and it’s the only place this week to see John Travolta in drag.
Thursday
This could mark an epic game seven showdown between the Lakers and the Celtics, but that doesn’t seem very likely meaning you have a great chance to check out “The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest Criminals” on Tru TV at 9:00. Check out people trying to rob banks packing nothing more than their finger or a guy who dressed up like a shrub. Complete with commentary by C-List comedians!
Speaking of C-list comedians, Bill Bellamy hosts the umpteenth season of “Last Comic Standing” on NBC at 8:30. It’s like “American Idol” except the contestants are trying to be funny.
Also, remember to keep watching “Swingtown” at 10:00 on CBS. It just may be the best new series all year.
Sunday
A&E is looking to rot everybody’s brains with two sets of back-to-back celebreality programs. At 9:00, choke down a double shot of “Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels” followed by a similar dose of “The Two Coreys”. Washed-up celebrities never looked so good.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, “Masterpiece Theatre” returns on PBS at 9:00 with a 90-minute dose of Inspector Lewis. Alan Cumming starts at the titular detective, investigating the murder of a student at Oxford University.
Finally, space nuts will be delighted by a new installment of “When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions” at 9:00 on Discovery. This two-hour installment details the repair of the Hubble Telescope and the construction of the International Space Station. It also looks forward at a possible mission to Mars.
