CD Review: Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs

June 18th, 2008 Written by: Winnie Jaing· No Comments

Narrow Stairs CoverDeath Cab for Cutie’s new album is very different from its predecessor. It is slower, more specific, and much more intentional. With “I Will Possess Your Heart” clocking in at a little over 8 minutes, we can tell that Ben Gibbard spent time meticulously planning out every word while the band fine-tuned every melody to get this album up to standard.

Narrow Stairs is much more instrumental compared to Plans. Although Gibbard still sings quite a bit, he leaves much more room for the listener to get lost in slow, smooth guitar solos. In songs like “The Ice is Getting Thinner” and “Your New Twin Sized Bed”, there are measures and measures of melodies without words. Gone are the days of “Soul Meets Body”, replaced by a more serious side to Death Cab for Cutie.

The change in sound for the band is partially based on the fact that it was recorded entirely on two-inch tape, limiting the amount of overdubbing, but at the same time, producing a live effect for the album as well. In essence, this album is a representation of the band without the frivolous enhancements of today’s society: pure talent at its best.
