R. Kelly Acquitted on All Counts in Child Porn Case

Since video tape evidence just ain’t what it used to be, R&B star R. Kelly was found not guilty Friday afternoon on all counts in his child pornography case. The jury researched their verdict in less than eight hours of deliberation. Mr. Kelly (who has a tendency to get trapped in closet’s here and there) was charged with 14 counts of videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl, who prosecutors say was as young as 13. Kelly faced a maximum of 15 years of prison if convicted.

The trial was highlighted by defense attorneys arguing that the man on tape didn’t have R. Kelly’s large back mole, and the prosecution calling witnesses like a woman who said she engaged in three-way sex with Kelly and the girl prosecutors said was on the tape. In the end the defense seemed to plant enough reasonable doubt on the jurors to get Kelly off. Both Kelly and the now 23-year-old alleged victim denied that it was them on the tape and neither testified during the trial.

Kelly was visibly moved and relieved as the not guilty verdict was read. Minutes later, as he left the courthouse surrounded by security guards, the singer left the courtroom and climbed into a waiting SUV as dozens of fans cheered. Whether he pulled out his biretta is still unknown.

Kelly is scheduled to release an album later this year. Here’s hoping he’s got another twenty or thirty “Trapped In A Closet” chapters or possibly a “Real Talk” sequel left in him.

Weezer Plans a Hootenanny

Have you ever wanted to play with Weezer? Maybe lock eyes with Rivers during a guitar solo, purse your lip as you hit a sharp A and watch him give a quick nod in approval. Well folks, sometimes dreams can come true. Weezer has released plans for a five- date Hootenanny Tour which will allow fans of the band to strap on instruments and rock out with the band. While details are limited, a video posted on Weezer’s website states that contest winners (did I mention that the Hootenanny will be a radio contest- well, now I did) are implored to “bring an instrument (or at least their voice and hands)” to a private location and rock out with the band. The performances will be recorded for future airing on the radio station. Apparently, any instrument will do, so all you glockenspiel players don’t fret, you can be included. The Los Angeles Hootenanny will take place on June 23rd, and I’m guessing that you can win your way in through KROQ (or maybe STAR, who knows). Weezer has also announced that they will tour the states in non-Hootenanny fashion in the fall (not sure why, but I’m kinda thinking they might be headlining KROQ’s LA Invasion in September- just an inkling).

Beck to Headline Street Scene

Beck and the Black Crowes have been announced as the headliners for the annual San Diego Street Scenemusic festival. Wait, the Black Crowes? Really? Umm, ok

The annual festival will take place in downtown San Diego (Petco Park adjacent) on September 19th and 20th. While past years may have focused heavily on punk and rap artists, this years Street Scene is fully committing to the indie rout with bands like Justice, Spoon, TV On The Radio and Cat Power topping the bill. Other highlights include Vampire Weekend, The Hives, Devotchka, Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Atmosphere. A limited supply of two-day tickets are now onsale for $75, which considering the price of most multi-day music festivals is a steal.

Lil Wayne Sold More Records Then You This Week

I think since I’ve spent the last two months following the NHL and NBA playoffs, I must be out of the loop. I knew that rapper Lil Wayne was kinda popular, but I must have way underestimated him.

It will be announced today that Lil Wayne’s new album “Tha Carter III” has sold over 1 million copies this week, the first album to sell over a million in it’s first week since 50 Cent’s 2005 album “The Massacre”. This is big news for the music industry, as even the biggest of artists (Kanye West, 50 Cent, Linkin Park) haven’t been able to cross the million mark its first week since the bottom fell out of the record industry a couple of years. It should be interesting to see what Coldplay, who is one of the most marketable rock artists on this planet, can sell this week. The bands new album “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” sold 300k in it’s first three days of release in Britainlast weekend. The album probably won’t come close to Lil Wayne’s sales (by the way, look for a huge dropoff for “Tha Carter III” next week), but could match Linkin’ Park’s 600k first week for “Minutes to Midnight”.

With Lil’ Wayne already a hit it could be a pretty good rest of the year for record sales as Metallica releases their album “Death Magnetic” in September, and rumored releases by Green Day and U2 in stores by possibly Christmas time. Now if only the industry could somehow get the Beatles back together.
