LA Wounded: Teen Kills Mom, Heat Kills Woman, Boy Shoots Cousin

  • One killed and 5 injured in house fire - A house fire in Bellflower around 5am this morning killed a 28-year-old woman and sent five other people to the hospital. The fire was knocked down about a half hour later. A 55-year-old woman and 14-year-old girl were taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital with minor burns on their arms and legs. A 17-year-old girl was treated for smoke inhalation and two girls, ages 7 and 9, were taken to be checked for injuries. The relationship of the victims is unknown, but several related families lived in the residence. The cause of the fire appears accidental but is under investigation.
  • Woman dies, husband burnt from LA heat - The couple from Oracle, Ariz., was driving Monday in eastern San Bernardino County, when temperatures reached 116 degrees. 90-year-old Virgil Sanders stopped their car, got out and walked away. Authorities don’t know why he did, but 77-year-old Joyce Sanders took off in search of her husband. A passerby Monday evening found them 50 yards from their car at the bottom of a hillside.Joyce Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene and her husband was hospitalized in extremely critical condition with second- and third-degree burns from the sun and lying on the ground.

  • Teen kills mom after being grounded - Opening statements got underway Wednesday in a trial accusing, Rachael Scarlett Mullenix, 19, of stabbing her mother, Barbara Mullenix, in her Huntington Beach condominium in 2006, for grounding her. Her mother’s body was found floating near Newport Harbor Yacht Club, wrapped in towels, with a butter knife embedded in her right eye. A few days after, Mullenix and her boyfriend, Ian Westleigh Allen, were arrested on suspicion of murder in Louisiana. Mullenix says she was kidnapped by her boyfriend, but authorities say the pair were on the run and headed to Florida. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.
  • 16-year-old boy held after shooting 22-year-old who is now on life support - Allegedly, Victor Hugo Hernandez, 22, was at his cousin’s apartment in the 1600 block of West Lomita Boulevard in Harbor City when an argument prompted the the 16-year-old boy to shoot him. The suspect, whose name is being withheld because of his age, is in custody. The suspect called police and waited for them to arrive, Hernandez was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and is now on life support. It is not clear if the incident was gang-related.
  • 7 people injure die a 5 car pile-up - Seven people were injured, two critically, in a five-car pileup on the 91 Freeway in Long Beach on Wednesday night. The CHP is still investigating what caused the crash. CHP found two vehicles overturned, a pickup truck ended up on top of a Ford Focus, and two drivers in need of rescuing at the scene. The two critically injured people were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Two people were taken to Pacific Hospital of Long Beach with minor injuries, and the other three injured in the crash were treated and released.
  • Two rottweilers leave a woman critically injured -A woman was seriously injured Thursday when she was attacked by two Rottweilers at about 11 a.m. The dogs were impounded and animal control officers were trying to locate their owners and figure out why they attacked.The woman was taken to a hospital.
