CD Review: 2*Sweet - Sleep Without Dreams

June 20th, 2008 Written by: Winnie Jaing· No Comments

2sweet cover“Dreamcatcher” is an appropriate title that serves as a great introduction to 2*Sweet’s album Sleep Without Dreams. In a melody similar to something Danny Elfman would do, a piano intro followed by a chorus of singers segues into something that resembles Fall Out Boy’s adaptation to “What’s This?” in Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.

In three years, Chicago based band 2*Sweet has already made an impression in the music world, grasping the title as Alternative Press’ #1 Unsigned Band of 2007 and making a dent at sales over at Smartpunk.com. They even take the time out of their busy schedules to thank their fans. At first glance, 2*Sweet comes off as a band that slightly resembles Halifax in music style, but as you continue to listen to their music, you realize that they vary greatly. A mixture of emphasized vocals and heavy guitar riffs seep from every aspect of their songs. It’s hard to be original with the huge history of good (and bad) music that we’ve been raised with, but 2*Sweet manages to do it just fine.

2*Sweet’s debut album is like a story told through music. “Life’s Black Ice” laments the loss of a friend, one that the band ultimately pays tribute to by dedicating the record to him in remembrance . Death is prominent in the album, but it seems like 2*Sweet makes light of the situation and instead, paints it as sleep without dreams.

Songs you should listen to: “Dateless for Armageddon” | “What I Did on My Summer Vacation”
