If you’re like me, there will be only 3 things you need to experience about the huge, heavenly and happening Porto’s Bakery in Burbank to keep you coming back for more:
1. Guava.
Tangy, fresh… bright pink. Guava cheese strudel. Guava roll. Guava cake. Give it to me now tropical pastry king.
2. Potato Balls.
Lightly fried, softly packed with fresh, spiced ground beef and best when wedged between two slices of fresh baked Cuban bread on the “Papa Preparada” sandwich. I’ll say it again, I ain’t afraid. Potato Balls. In a sandwich! Drive there now and eat.
3. They’re CHEAP!
It’s so inexpensive you’ll wonder what they’re getting away with. But the quality of food is fresh, fun and versatile. Homemade cake to order? Porto’s. Roasted pork and garlic sandwich? Porto’s. Plantain Chips? (because you can never eat too many of those) Porto’s. Good croissants for less then a buck? Porto’s! Surprisingly good coffee? Care to take a guess?

I’m always eager to go to Porto’s because it really is a surprisingly lovely, homey bakery-binge stop. Considering that it’s hustle-bustle can sometimes rival the summer crowds at Disneyland that’s no small feat.
If you need your drool-inspiring petit-fours and golden-glazed pastry dough, then stop in to steam the endless gleaming case of Cuban, French and traditional pastries and leave with a heavy bag full of your favorite sugar-sprinkle danishes without breaking the bank. And with a lovely front patio on one of the quintessentially well planted neighborhood blocks, and a happy, responsible staff, Porto’s will make the sugar-craze even that much sweeter.
And if you care for some history with your coconut strudel, the original, and I believe, even BIGGER Porto’s bakery, is in Glendale.
