Reel Big Fish have been around for a while, but their music continues to get better and better with age. “We’ve definitely gotten better at writing songs,” says Scott Klopfenstein, trumpeter, guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist for Reel Big Fish in a recent interview with LA Cityzine. “We used to just put a bunch of insane parts and stuff.” While the music is still wacky and entertaining, it serves as a wonderful soundtrack to almost anything.
Reel Big Fish’s most recent album, Monkeys for Nothin’ and the Chimps for Free, is a perfect display of just how much the band has progressed over its 16 year reign as one of the most renowned ska bands of their time. Songs like “Party Down” and “Another F.U. Song” are all about having fun and letting loose - warning people that this band is nothing like the serious bands you hear on the radio nowadays. While some of the tracks on the album are re-recorded versions of rejected album demos, others are songs from RBF’s Cheer Up! sessions that didn’t make the cut.
In a way, Reel Big Fish’s first self-produced album lashes out at anyone that tries to oppress them. The album is about independence, doing what they believe in, and finding their own way. It is empowering in the sense that it pushes people to do things they normally wouldn’t do without that nudge in the right direction. The horns, drums, and guitars don’t hurt either. This album is perfectly pieced together and provides for easy listening.
Songs you should listen to: “Party Down” | “Slow Down” | “Call You”
