The American Dream (Russian Style)

If you’ve been near or around the 400 block of North La Brea Avenue, just south of 3rd, then you’ve probably seen the name of my latest subject: Kira Plastinina. Apparently I’m on a gluttonous quest to discover individuals who mock the childhood I spent playing Nintendo instead of becoming a prodigy. So it makes sense that I would stumble across the world’s youngest fashion designer, 16-year old Kira Plastinina.

Heiress to a fortune earned in the production of diary products and orange juice concentrate (who knew?), Kira Plastinina’s childish doodles became the focus of her business savvy father’s attention. Deciding her to be a prodigy (this is where I give my mother the stink eye for not recognizing the genius behind the ensemble I fashioned out of toilet paper for my Barbie’s date with Ken’s nameless Black counterpart), Sergei Plastinina invested in his most prized possession – his daughter.

Forty-nine stores later in their country of origin, this fast growing empire is making its way over to the states. The flagship store on La Brea is one of 50 set to open in the United States in the next 3 years. The modestly priced clothes (a $45 dollar average price point) are what I believe I’d find left over if Heatherette and Juicy Couture had a duel and fought to the death. They’re trendy, brightly colored, and ideal for any teen competing to be on the next episode of MTV’s My Super Sweet 16.

Kira’s success is a pretty basic formula that includes youth, wealth, and wish fulfillment. She’s what little girls dream of becoming – the girl other girls aspire to be. Take notes kids.
