Wildflour Pizza - Not Bad, Not Great

img_3522.jpgFor a long time, I have wanted to try Wildflour Pizza on Main St. in Santa Monica. I was always drawn to the restaurant’s cheery yellow exterior and hole-in-the-wall vibe, and a sign outside says “#1 Pizza LA Times” (although it does not mention when). This week, I finally got to sample their pie. The verdict? I was hoping for better.

The inside of Wildflour Pizza is very tiny and dark. The walls are heavy brick and the floors are covered with wood shavings, a throwback to another era. A few rustic tables and chairs crowd the space. The building itself looks incredibly old, so from an atmospheric standpoint it gave the restaurant a somewhat enchanting feel.

img_3510.jpgI ordered a slice of cheese with black olives and green peppers on a whole wheat crust ($3.50 total). A little strange, I know, but those toppings are my favorites. The slice came smaller than expected, slapped down on a white paper plate you might buy at Ralphs. The crust was an average thickness and crunchy on the bottom - the pizza stayed rigid when I held it in the air. I was hoping for more of a whole wheat flavor in the crust, but it didn’t taste all that different from a regular crust. The sauce was alright, nothing special. They were generous with the toppings, and the vegetables were cooked, so I know they didn’t add them to a slice of already cooked plain cheese.

My brother ordered a lunch special - a slice of pizza, a small side salad, and a drink for $6.50. His experience was similar. It wasn’t great, it wasn’t bad, it was just kind of “eh.” The salad looked like a bagged salad with crunchy lettuce leaves, croutons and runny Italian dressing.

img_3509.jpgThe service was fast and the restaurant was clean, but there just wasn’t anything that special about it. Wildflour also serves a selection of pastas, sub sandwiches, salads, and pita pockets, and to be fair we did not try any of these things, but when “pizza” is in the restaurant name, that should be the main focus. So if you’re in Santa Monica and you’re looking for really good pizza, try elsewhere.

I’m with you - I’ve ordered the pizza and the lasagna - neither of which are good. The food isn’t inedible, it’s just not good.
