Many of you have heard about people donating their hair, well now is your chance. 4th grader Kara Grist, recently donated her own hair to help children who suffer from alopecia areata, a condition which causes baldness for which there is no known cause or cure. Now, Riverside Drive Elementary School student Kara has set about enlisting others to share in the joy of providing a gift with potentially life-changing consequences. With her upcoming benefit titled “Hair Today – Hope Tomorrow,” she seeks to restore confidence and normalcy to children.

Today Sunday, June 22, 2008 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Nona’s Hair Studio in Van Nuys, CA, anyone seeking to shed at least 10 inches of their long, winter locks in preparation of the hot summer will not only be given a free haircut and style but will also be providing a gift with dramatic overtones. With the goal of having 50 people donate, the freshly cut hair will be packaged and sent to “Locks of Love,” an organization created to provide the most realistic hairpieces possible to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 suffering from alopecia areata.

“This all started when one of my Mom’s friends came by one day and had cut her long hair short,” said the 10-year old Sherman Oaks resident when asked how she learned about hair donations. “She told me she did it to help make a wig for people who had a medical condition that made them lose their hair. It was sad thinking about people losing their hair because they were sick so I asked my Mom if I could cut my hair too.”

Event located at Nona’s Hair Studio:

14105 Burbank Blvd.

Stylists will be on hand to provide free cuts and style to anyone donating 10″ or more of hair which will be packaged and shipped to “Locks of Love.”

Tax-deductable, financial donations in the form of cash or check will also be accepted on site to help support the non-profit “Locks of Love.” Additional information on the organization and alopecia areata can be found at www.locksoflove.org.
