“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” ~ Immanuel Kant
With all the homeless animals in Los Angeles, you’d think it would be crazy easy to find one to adopt. I was under that impression when I decided I wanted to rescue a dog. After spending a couple of months filling out loads of applications online, scoping out animal rescue agencies and trekking to adoption fairs far and wide every weekend (I mean, I even drove to the South Bay!), it finally dawned on me. No one was going to give me a dog to love. The reason? I had never been a dog owner (in my adult life anyway) and these dog rescue fanatics were not willing to take a chance on me. I respect that but I wasn’t one to give up so easily. I knew I had a lot of love to give and I was certain there was a dog out there that needed me. That’s when my friend suggested the Burbank Animal Shelter. What a brilliant idea! I adopted my cat from there 10 years ago so I knew it was a good shelter. I also knew where it was (bonus) so my friend and I ran over one afternoon. There, sitting in a cage shivering was my soon-to-be best friend.
I was told he’d been picked up running down Burbank Boulevard like a maniac. I found it comforting to know at least part of his story. (I remembered that they’d discovered my cat in a dumpster behind the Media Center Mall.) As the employee told me what she knew about my dog, I realized that these people actually care about the animals. Yeah, it’s an animal shelter, and therefore has loads of negative connotations associated with it. But, let me tell you, adopt a pet from this joint and you won’t be sorry. It’s clean, air-conditioned and friendly. The volunteers here love animals. You can even take the dog out to the back yard and play with it first to make sure you vibe with it. The staff also let me lead my dog through the cat area to see how he responded to felines. (Couldn’t have an aggressive dog scaring my senior citizen kitty, right?)
Just think, you will be literally rescuing a fuzzy little being instead of taking one out of the loving home of an animal rights worker. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that either; all these animals need to be adopted.) But, these are the dogs and cats that the animal rights workers haven’t gotten to yet. It’s a cheap and easy way to find an animal to love. The paperwork is minimal and they don’t ask for your dental records.
The adoption process is easy. They will even send your animal to a doctor first if he/she needs to be spayed or neutered. (Included in the price of adoption.) And, the shelter is simple to find. It’s right off Burbank Blvd. You know, on the way to Costco and that big shopping center with Target.
What are you waiting for? Go forth and adopt!
