LA Wounded: Father and Son Killed, Puppy Thrown, Postal Worker Killed

  • Postal worker killed in Silver Lake collision - A U.S. Postal Service worker, who has not been identified, was killed today when she was thrown from her mail truck and then crushed when it landed on top of her. She was driving in the 2000 block of N. Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake about 11:30 a.m. when her postal truck collided with another vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of a second vehicle was taken to a hospital and treated for unspecified injuries.
  • Father and son killed in shooting - A father, Juan Alberto Garcia, 44, and his 12-year-old son Albert Anthony Garcia, are dead after someone opened fire on a crowd at a backyard high school graduation party in LA. Both died the hospital shortly after arrival. A man and a woman  in their 20’s were also struck by the gunfire but are recovering. Police continue to investigate and have not announced any arrests or a motive for the attack.
  • Man tried to kidnap 5-year-old from mall - Security cameras revealed that a man, who remains at large, tried to kidnap a 5-year-old girl from a store in the Long Beach Towne Center mall. The man attempted to carry the girl out of a clothing store in the mall at about 7 p.m. on Sunday. The mother saw what was happening and started to scream and the man fled without the girl. No descriptions or names have been released.

  • 16 inmates injured when bus overturns - A bus carrying an inmate firefighting crew has overturned in a remote part of southwest Riverside County, injuring 16 people, two of them critically. The bus blew a tire and rolled over near state Route 371 on Monday night. Four people were hospitalized, two with critical injuries and two moderately injured. Twelve people with minor injuries were treated at the scene.
  • Public pool closed due to violence -  A public pool in Watts was closed down today due to violence. About 30 young men went on a rampage, throwing a lifeguard and to workers into the pool on Sunday afternoon at the 109th Street Swimming Pool, after workers announced the pool was being closed because of dirty water. Trouble at the city’s public pools is not new. The Watts Gang Task Force will come up with a safety plan before the pool is reopened.
  • Man arrested for throwing a puppy against a wall - An Adelanto dog owner, Donald Brown, has been arrested for allegedly throwing a puppy against a doghouse several times while drunk. On Sunday night, after hearing yelps from the 12-pound pit bull-Labrador mix, neighbors confronted the puppy’s owner who appeared intoxicated and wouldn’t stop throwing the puppy. His neighbors called police. “Brown was throwing the puppy in the doghouse with enough force to move the house,” Johnson said. “He did this numerous times, and between each throw, hit the dog on the head causing it to yelp.”
  • Stabbing victim dies -  A man stabbed repeatedly late last night on a Norwalk street died this morning. The call came in at 11:59 p.m., initially reporting a man down, possibly a gunshot victim.When officers arrived, they found an unconscious man in his mid-20s with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics treated him at the scene and then took him to a hospital where, he was pronounced dead, Gama said. The man’s name was not immediately released.
