If you happened to be watching TV from 1976-78, it was hard to miss the most original and crazy talent show ever to hit the tube. Yes, I’m speaking of The Gong Show.
Famous for showcasing zany acts of all kinds including jugglers, comics, singers impersonators, and everything in between; The Gong Show was without a doubt, responsible for launching all the current Talent shows seen today. The hilarious, if not downright strange creator and host of the show Chuck Barris, was also responsible for such landmark TV shows as The Dating Game and The Newlywed game. The premise of the show was simple. A panel of three celebrity judges sat in front of a large gong, if you kept them and the audience entertained long enough you made it through and got scored, if not, you got the Gong! The winner of each show was awarded a cash prize of $516.32.
Well, if you weren’t old enough to see it the first time around don’t worry. It just so happens that the folks over at Comedy Central are bringing it back. With new host Dave Atell, mostly known for his show Insomniac and many standup appearances, The Gong Show will take on a whole new appearance. Since it will air on cable, the show will assuredly be more extreme in every way. Potty mouth humor, quagmire acts, Trophy girls, and some over the top celebrity judges are almost guaranteed to be part of the format. This time the prize money will go up to $600 and the winning contestants will receive a Championship “Gong” belt.
What the original program and the new version have in common is simply this. Who wants to go on TV and make the biggest goof of themselves; and with today’s media hungry society and culture, I’m sure they’ll be no shortage of contestants. Whether or not the new show will stand the test of time is uncertain, but just like everything else that’s populating the tube, it should be fun to at least watch the first couple episodes.
