Celebrate National Candy Month!

June 29th, 2008 Written by: Nicola· No Comments

Bonbons Great news, everyone. June is National Candy Month! Now, here’s a reason to celebrate, overdo the sugar, and pretend to be a kid! While participating in this holiday does not really require instruction (Drive to 7-Eleven, pick up a Reese’s and a bag of Sour Patch Kids, eat), you could do something a little cuter. Why? Just cause? Sure. Here are a couple places to truly experience a kid-in-a-candy-shop feeling, but minus the Big Chew bubble gum and Lick-a-Maid packets.

Boule was compared to La Durée candy shop in Paris, which immediately caught my eye and told me it’d be a place to see. (Located throughout Paris, La Durée is, like, candy taken to the most gourmet level. As in, wealthy Parisians meeting over a glass of wine and a plate of.. one chocolate. For probably more than your average Parisian entrée. Ridiculous, but if you like candy, marvelous!)

Similarly, Boule was rated three dollar signs on yelp, making me wary, but that much more anxious to try it.

It’s located at 420 La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood, 90048. (310) 289-9977. Visit and drool at Boule online.

Gourmandise Paris again calls to the Parisiens, making me hope that its goodies will be up to par with French bon-bons. Or maybe it just has a nice-sounding French name. Luckily, it’s the former. Gourmandise actually started in Paris over 40 years ago , in 1963. In fact, it was located on the same street I took yoga on - Rue de Renard. Very cool!

Known for their chocolate bonbons (French candies, to clarify) and almond dragées (almonds lightly coated in sugar), and candied chestnuts (!), Gourmandise certianly provides more than the more common LA dessert locations: frozen yogurt parlors and coffee shops. And for those preferring these because of their “lighter” fare, an almond dragée might be a nice alternative!

This little taste of Paris is located, well, at 156 S. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills, 90212. (310) 271-3366.

Tempt yourself to Gourmandise’s lovely treats online, or just head straight to Beverly Drive and dig in!

PS: I was sad, because I love Diddy Reise Cookie in Westwood so much that I was tempted to include it in this post as a candy place. But as it consists of huge cookies stuffed with ice cream, I debated whether I could even call that candy. I mean, they’re meals! And plus, I think it deserves its own post. So check out these slightly less American joints and look for Diddy Reise info soon!

Wow! A whole month dedicated to candy. What more can you ask for? Well, eating candy like Parisians may make a “staycation” sweeter than traveling abroad.

Yikes! I thought my spelling of Parisiens looked wrong. I apologize to any Francophiles (lord I hope I spelled that right as well) who may be reading.
