
- Mother and daughter use beer to ward off sex offender - Linda Dodson, 45, and her 77-year old mother were able to save themselves with beer. A convicted sex offender broke into the house, attacked Linda in her bed “He had his big hands … on my throat, my mouth and my nose and I’m flopping and I’m thinking oh my God, I’m being murdered right now and I don’t know why.” The mother tried to help but was thrown to the floor. The mother smelled alcohol on his breath and offered him some beer, he said yes. While drinking the daughter said she was going to use the bathroom but instead called the cops. Louie Herrera, a convicted child molester from Norwalk, was arrested. The women were not badly hurt.
- Man in Reseda kidnapped and help for ransom- Seven men and a woman, whose names have not been released, were in custody Wednesday for allegedly kidnapping a man and holding him for ransom in a Reseda home. During the raid, police located the victim in the home’s cluttered garage, as the captors threated to kill him. The 24-year-old Latino had one eye swollen shut and cuts and bruises covering his face, but was listed in stable condition at a hospital. “We got a phone call that said ‘Enough’s enough, we’re gonna kill the guy,’” Gannon told the Daily News. “They threatened to cut his fingers off at one point to show they weren’t fooling around.” Gannon said investigators did not know why the victim was targeted, but that detectives were working through the night to figure out the motive.
- Couple is caught leaving kids at home and then crashing car -Â Sarah Isabelle Baldwin, 33, and her partner, Clinton Erin Daigle, 36, were in custody today for allegedly leaving their two young children home alone and then being involved in a pre-dawn hit-and-run crash that injured a woman. Police tracked the couple down to their home in the 4000 block of West Hoffer St by following a fluid and debris trail. Officers were called to the 800 block of Omar Street about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday to investigate the hit-and-run crash where a woman inside the home, who was asleep with her head facing the outside wall, suffered head, back and neck injuries. Officers tracking the debris obtained a search warrant and, at the home of the suspects, found a red Mercury Sable showing damage consistent with the two crashes. Investigators questioning the couple determined they had allegedly left their children, ages 5 and 3, alone while they went out.
- Homeless man on trial for torching cats - Homeless man, Timothy Kooyman, is facing trial for allegedly soaking live cats in gasoline and torching them in the Rancho Cucamonga area. Investigators testifying at the 24-year-old man’s preliminary hearing say Kooyman killed one of the cats by dousing it with gasoline and using a lighter to set it on fire while it was still alive. The flaming cat then ran into a vacant lot and started a brush blaze. Six hours after the May 13 brush fire, San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy Wendy Saucedo arrested Kooyman after she found a storage bin in his car with two mutilated, but alive, cats inside. The cats had broken legs and their tails were cut off.
- Police fatally shoot suspected gang member - An Inglewood police officer with an anti-gang task force shot and killed an alleged gang member who turned on him and concealed his left hand as if he had a weapon during a chase. The death in an alley behind 11118 Crenshaw Blvd. occurred about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, Inglewood police Lt. Bryan Mylar said. The man’s name had not yet been released, a coroner’s spokesman said. The officer chased the suspect after he saw him discard cash and drugs.
- Man arrested for claiming to carry bomb at LAX - A man was arrested at LAX on Wednesday after claiming to have a bomb in his backpack. TV reports said there was no immediate indication of an explosive. “A male individual on the public side of the international terminal of Los Angeles International Airport claimed to have explosive materials in his backpack,” the U.S. Transportation Safety Administration said in a statement. “Law enforcement officials responded and placed the individual into custody,” the TSA said. “A search of the area found an unattended bag located near a ticket counter in the international terminal and out of an abundance of caution a perimeter was established and the LAPD bomb squad is on the scene.”
- 77-year-old woman missing - Authorities Wednesday asked for the public’s help in finding a 77-year-old woman who has been missing since Monday. Gisela Adams of Winchester was last seen at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and California Oaks Road in Murrieta around 10 a.m. Monday, when she dropped off her husband for an appointment. Adams never returned for her husband, prompting him to report her disappearance. Adams is white, 5 feet 4 inches tall and 175 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a black and white blouse and white skirt. She was carrying a red purse. She was driving a white, 1997, four-door Buick LeSabre, California license plate 3UQR917.
- South LA man charged with cockfighting - Israel Ramirez, a 52-year-old South Los Angeles man, will be arraigned Thursday on charges that he ran an illegal cockfighting ring out of his home. Ramirez is charged with one felony count of cockfighting, two felony counts of animal cruelty as well as misdemeanor counts of possession of cockfighting paraphernalia and possession of birds with the intent to fight. The D.A.’s office says police were tipped off to a cock fight in progress at the suspect’s home. About 30 participants ran from the scene when police arrived, but 10 spectators were arrested along with Ramirez, who has a prior misdemeanor conviction for cockfighting. Ramirez faces up to five years in state prison if convicted of all charges.
