LA Wounded: Mummified Body, Shooting in Inglewood, Six Cats Mutilated

  • Man shot and killed in Inglewood -The fatally shot by Inglewood police Tuesday night has been identified at Ruben Walton Ortega, a 23 year-old from Inglewood.  He was shot and killed in an alley behind the 11100 block of Crenshaw Blvd. at about 6:20 p.m. Police said Ortega was a documented gang member of the Inglewood Family. Two officers with a uniformed gang task force received a call that men were loitering, when they arrived two men, one identified as Ortega, ran south into an alley while discarding cash and drugs. Ortega confronted an officer, refused to show his hands and kept his left hand concealed in his waistband. The officer, believing Ortega was armed, shot him.
  • Mummified body found in home - The coroner’s office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man whose mummified body was discovered in an abandoned house in Beverly Hills last week. The body was found by some kids skateboarding past that noticed a foul smell. Coroner’s detectives do not believe foul play was involved. They estimate the man was dead for roughly a year. The body was curled in a fetal position and appeared mummified. Based on an assortment of old bags and an old bicycle near the body, officers determined that the deceased was a homeless white man in his 40s or 50s.The cause of his death has not been determined.

  • Two killed on highway nea rSan Juan Capistrano - Two people were killed at 4:45 a.m. on Thursday when a Honda collided with a Toyota SUV on Ortega (74) Highway east of San Juan Capistrano, near La Pata Avenue. The Honda went onto the right shoulder and the driver over-corrected, causing it to swerve into the path of the SUV, she said. Both the driver and the passenger of the Honda were killed. The two people in the SUV were taken to Mission Hospital.
  • Man crashes into fire hydrant - A car crashed into a fire hydrant in the 16500 block of Mulholland Drive on Thursday causing a geyser of water to shoot into some electrical lines. LADWP workers responded to the scene and shut the hydrant off. It was unclear if anyone was injured in the crash.
  • Sixth cat found gutted in La Quinta - Riverside County sheriff’s officials are investigating the suspicious deaths of three cats recently reported in the La Quinta area. Six felines have been found mysteriously gutted, mutilated or shot in recent weeks. Investigators believe the first three cat slayings, which took place within a one-mile radius in the northern part of La Quinta, are linked. He said in those cases the gutted cats had not been attacked by an animal. Gregory said it was less clear if animals could have killed the cats found more recently. “These are happening in many residential areas, so we are certainly urging the public to contact us if they see anything suspicious.” Anyone who has witnessed violence against an animal in Indio should call (760) 863-8990.
  • Fire destroys up to three Malibu homes -  A fire destroyed a beachfront house in Malibu this morning, damaged two others and shut down traffic in both directions on PCH. The fire was located at 21110 PCH, and was reported about 3 a.m. and was extinguished by 60 firefighters by 4:50 a.m. It has destroyed one beachfront house and damaged two others. Traffic on PCH was shut down until 7:2oa.m. The three-story house was vacant and for sale for more than $1 million. The fire spread to the two houses next to it. Another home was severely damaged and the third sustained minor damage. Six people were evacuated, but no injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
