Your Official Amy Winehouse Update
Alright, so whoever had “punches fan at festival” in the Amy Winehouse trouble pool congratulations, you win $50. England’s favorite drugged out sweetheart appeared to punch a fan during her Saturday night performance at the famed Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom. According to CNN.com, Winehouse stepped down into the pit between the outdoor stage and the audience during a rendition of “Rehab,” and seemed to lash out at a member of the crowd before being gently escorted back to the stage by security staff (I’m betting the crowd member already has some sort of deal with a British tabloid). According to festival organizer Michael Eavis, Winehouse lashed out at the fan because someone had grabbed her breasts. Notice that he didn’t say that the fan grabbed her breasts, just “someone.” If you haven’t been playing the “What in the World Is Up With Amy Winehouse” home game, then you’ve missed recent incident with Winehouse which have included singing racial slurs on tape at a drug den, wandering outside in a diaper and reportedly being diagnosed with emphysema as a consequence of chain smoking cigarettes and crack.
Brian Wilson, eat your heart out.
Girl Talk Takes His Sweat On The Road
Sweaty dance-rock mixer Girl Talk will take his sweaty act on the road for all of his sweaty fans this fall. The mash-up extraordinaire (whose given Christian name is Gregg Gillis) will tour in support of his new album Feed The Animals which is currently available on his website for a price of the downloaders choosing, and will hit the few places where CD’s are still sold (you know, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target hmmm, depressing) on September 23rd. The tour will hit L.A. on October 24th and 25th at the Henry Fonda Theater, where Mr. Gillis will surely set up in the middle of his sweaty crowd and mix until the men in suits kick him out.
Coldplay Is Still #1
Speaking of Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy, in it’s second week of release, people are continuing to choose Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” over any other record on the racks. Despite a 66% drop in sales, the band sold 249,000 copies last week to remain #1. While a 66% drop sounds drastic, this is the model that most big bands follow in sales: big first weeks followed by a steady drop-off then hopefully another pick-up in sales when the second single begins to penetrate.
Elsewhere on the charts, one of the few goods things about the low amount of records being sold is that you get some interesting names in the Top 20. This weeks entry of interest: Sigur Ros’ “Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Splium Endalaust” (which transltate to umm something) debates at #15 with 32,000 records sold. Not bad for an Icelandic band who pronunciation is still not properly known after 10 years.
Overall record sales are down 13.2% compared to this week last week. Next week Coldplay will probably remain number one but it should be kinda interested to see where The Alkaline Trio charts next week with their new (great) album “Agony & Irony”. It’s their most accessible album to date and they are getting a nice amount of play on modern rock radio. Probably not in the top five but it could chart on the back end of the top ten.
Rage + Mars = Lion
While I don’t have a lot of info on this (or I don’t have a lot of info to pass on from punkbands.com), I thought this might peak a few of your interest: Rage Against The Machine front-man (you have no idea how happy it makes me to not have to proceed that with the word “Former”) has announced a new project with former Mars Volta drummer Joe Theodore. The pairing will be called One Day As A Lion and will release an EP on July 22nd on Anti-Record. I must say: sounds intriguing.
And Finally
To open up some debate, Drum Magazine has unveiled their reader-voted list of Best Punk Drummers Working Today. The Top Four drummers named by the readers are: Travis Barker (Blink 182 and +44), Tre Cool (Green Day), Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) and Bill Stevenson (Black Flag). Not a bad list, but its strange to not see Josh Freese from The Vandals. Any opinions out there?
