BET Awards Red Carpet Roundup

Last Tuesday our favorite stars collided for the 2008 BET Awards Show at the Shrine Auditorium here in the heart of LA. While I could focus on the best dressed or the performances that had us texting our friends to make sure they were watching, I’d rather focus on another issue of much greater importance. I consider it my civic duty to address what appears to be a terrifying trend emerging among my people, and must be stopped at all costs: sensible women sporting haircuts apparently inspired by Dora the Explorer.

Jennifer Hudson, Lil Mama, and Keri Hilson are just three offenders of said haircut. A good cut should flatter and frame your face, not cause people to inquire where Diego and Boots the Monkey are. I understand that celebrities have to push envelopes, even if they miss the mark on occasion, to stay relevant. This haircut is not only incredibly unflattering, but creates the illusion of broad shoulders and a disproportionally round – and yet strangely small – face. Is that the look you were going for, Jennifer? If so, mission accomplished.

I implore the readers of LA.CityZine to discourage your friends, sisters, cousins, mothers, and lovers from following this trend. We can stop this before it starts. Please, won’t you think of the children?
