Art This Week: Prisons, Cities, and…Laundry?

July 5th, 2008 Written by: Steph· No Comments

Sunshine, barbecue, and fireworks will keep you busy and offer a fun-filled day; but what about the rest of the week? For those of you looking to wind down after a heat-filled Independence Day, LA’s art selection is definitely worth checking out. There are a lot of free events in the city as well as those worth the admission fee of a couple George Washingtons. Read below for more information about “Prison Nation,” “Exposed Cities,” “Ironings performed by Mung Lar Lam,” and “When the Sun Shines, It Does Not Need Proof.” With a selection like this, how can your long weekend not be celebration-worthy?

Prison Nation: Posters on the Prison Industrial Complex: A darker look at our nation, this gallery focuses on the fact that the U.S. has the largest prison population in the world – over 2.3 million – and California has been increasing the number of prisons to accommodate the over 170,000 inmates here. “Prison Nation” unfurls critical issues surrounding our overzealous system of mass incarceration – conspiracy provisions, dysfunctional parole systems, and inadequate legal representation to name a few.

June 14, 2008 - July 12, 2008; 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Guillaume Zuili: Exposed Cities: Urbanism, nature, and humans: The landscapes of Guillaume Zuili are much deeper than pretty pictures. Zuili is a French photographer who documents issues of society by capturing photos of cities. In capturing juxtapositions, he reveals history and the evolution of both prosperity and decay at the same place and time.

Ironings performed by Mung Lar Lam: An innovator, Lam uses cotton fabric, starch, and an iron to address issues such as traditional women’s roles, domestic tasks, and “craft” in art. She will fold, un-fold, mark, and re-iron select works at her public events. Something that hasn’t exactly been overdone, this will be worth your while.

Ami Tallman – When the Sun Shines, It Does Not Need Proof: Tallman focuses on the similarities between Gurus and Dictators and particularly the aesthetic devices that both use to create awe and devotion amongst their followers. An interesting theme is made beautiful yet brooding with her balance of power, hope, bliss, and betrayal. The images include depictions of crowds, pageants, hippies, bannered streets, shrines, and as expected, gurus and dictators.
