The only thing more depressing than the work week following a three-day weekend is one dripping with bad summertime TV.
Luckily, you needn’t fear the latter aspect of this post mini-vacation double whammy as you’ve come to the best place to find good TV for the week. Read on and discover a list of programs that will soften the blow of another five-day grind.
Monday
On ABC, it’s a night of romance with the two-hour finale of “The Bachelorette” followed by a one-hour “After the Finale” special. Can true love really be found on a TV show with name tags and rose ceremonies? Find out tonight at 8:00.
On E! at 10:00, check out “The Soup Presents: People Who Won’t Go Away.” I wonder if any former contestants on “The Bachelor” will make the list.
Finally, check out the return of the excellent travel series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” at 10:00 on The Travel Channel. Tonight, Tony journeys to Laos to sample the local cuisine and culture and most likely burn through more cigarettes than Jim Leyland during a rain delay. If you’ve never seen this show before, then also check out two repeats starting at 8:00. It’s a real trip.
Tuesday
Just when you thought reality TV had reached its low-point for the year, the return of “The Moment of Truth” at 8:00 on FOX digs the hole a little bit deeper. Catch an all new episode following the twisted game show’s sort break, and learn more than you ever wanted to know about a person you’ve never met.
Fans of watching rich people be rich will enjoy the second season premiere of BET’s “Baldwin Hills.” It’s just like “The Hills” or “Laguna Beach” or “The Real Housewives of Wherever” except now the cast is black, like that makes any difference whatsoever.
“The Secret Life of the American Teenager” drew huge ratings for its series premiere last week; its second episode debuts tonight. The series tells us that unplanned teenage pregnancy is nothing like the fun and whimsy of “Juno.” It involves a lot of crying, hugging and Molly Ringwald. The oddest thing about this show is that, for the most part, the kids in it are actually the ages of the characters they play. It’s amazing how young people in high school actually look after years of having people in their mid-to-late-twenties playing freshmen.
Wednesday
Ted Koppel is back in all of his toupeed glory at 10:00 on the Discovery Channel. Tonight, he takes us to the Chinese city of Chongqing as part of his documentary series investigating the capitalist leanings of the Communist Republic. And you thought there was only cheesy reality TV on during the summer.
Getting back to cheesy reality, check out a marathon of “She’s Got the Look” starting at 5:00. It’s kind of like “America’s Next Top Model” except the women are all over the age of 35 and has former models that are even more washed up as the judges.
Thursday
“The Greatest American Dog” premieres tonight at 8:00 on CBS. Remember that show on The Family Channel “That’ My Dog!”? It’s like that, except it’s an hour, and the contestants stand to win $250,000 instead of a bunch of dog food. You could also say that it’s like “The Westminster Kennel Cup Dog Show” without the boring.
Penn and Teller are back with their series “Penn & Teller: Bullshit!” on Showtime at 10:00. Tonight’s episode deals with myths about Dolphins. Expect a lot of snarky investigation into lies about everybody’s favorite finned friends.
HGTV is treating us with an entire night of brand new programming. Starting at 8:00, check out new episodes of “Designed to Sell,” “Myles of Style,”,”Rate My Space,” “Extreme Living,” and “House Hunters.” You’ll get to look at other peoples’ homes while the repo men are clearing the furniture out of yours.
Sunday
Our long national nightmare is over as “Big Brother” returns to CBS tonight at 8:00. Meet all the house-guests and try to guess which is the most unstable and likely to engage in knife play.
Enough of that.
The biggest show of the summer debuts tonight at 9:00 on HBO. “Generation Kill” details the story of the first reconnaissance battalion serving in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The series is based on the award-winning book by “Rolling Stone” journalist Evan Wright, who spent two months embedded with the battalion, and adapted for television by David Simon and Ed Burns, the creators of “The Wire.” Should be fantastic.
Remember to check back every Monday
