The “…And Then Again: Printed Series” art exhibition at UCLA’s Hammer Museum examines the development of imagery in prints. The prints span from European Renaissance to present day. The majority of the works come from the extensive collection of works in the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts. The exhibit provides museum patrons with the opportunity to explore and study “themes of narrative, sequence, interaction, and variation.” according to Cynthia Burlingham, director of the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, UCLA, and deputy director of collections at the Hammer Museum. The artists explore the serial image in a variety of different ways that reminds us of the language of the time and the evolution of media through the ages. It also emphasizes the importance of the visual arts in culture.
Art from Jacques Callot to Chris Burden and Christiane Baumgartner among many others is on display at this exhibit. Each piece has something new and unique to offer museum-goers as well as critics. The artists exploration of visual imagery differs between time periods, places, and of course, culture.
