
- 5-year-old killed after being buried alive in the sand - 24-year-old Juan Francisco Nunez is in custody for allegedly burying a 5-year-old boy alive at the beach, which resulted in the child’s death. The boy had been playing with friends and family at Pismo State Beach early Friday. Nunez allegedly, buried the young boy in the sand up to his neck and then covered his face in sand. The boy chocked on the sand and was transported by ambulance to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital where he died soon after.
- Inmates sue for contracting Hepatitis C from prison - A group of California prisoners infected with hepatitis C say they are suing the state because they aren’t getting proper medical treatment. A lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court seeks class action status saying that as many as 40 percent of the state’s 190,000 inmates are infected and many report difficulty getting adequate care. Lead plaintiff Kevin Jackson is an inmate at the California State Prison at Solano and he says despite a 2007 diagnosis of an advanced stage of the disease, he was repeatedly refused treatment.
- Police think that mother took missing 12-year-old girl - The LAPD has named the biological mother of a missing 12-year-old girl “a person of interest” in her disappearance and that of an 8-year-old girl from San Dimas. 38-year-old Iris Pineda Zavala of Monrovia, the mother of 12-year-old Estephanie Flores is being urged to contact authorities. Flores and Robin Lemus were reported missing shortly before 7 a.m. Monday, along with the family’s dark blue 1998 Lexus ES300, license number 3XSR179. Flores apparently knows how to drive and may have driven off in the car, Laub said. But the girls subsequently may have been assisted by an adult. Flores is Latino, 4 feet 11 inches tall and 130 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. Lemus is Latino, 4 feet 9 inches tall and 70 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. - 5 people arrested after leading police on a DUI car chase - Police spotted a man who was driving recklessly at Budlong Ave and West Century Blvd in Westmont area around 11:10 p.m. Deputies tried to pull the car over but they did not comply and lead police in a chase. It ended when the driver and front passenger lept from the car leaving three people in the back of a moving vehicle. Officers quickly took the pair into custody and their names were not immediately released. Footage showed the unmanned vehicle come to a stop when it a hit a tree, and officers took the backseat passengers into custody.
