
- Long Beach man sentenced to 26 years to life for stove death - Cole Allen Wilkins, 32, was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison, in the death of David Piquette, a 10-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department in Corona. Piquette was killed when he was crushed by a cement truck on the 91 Freeway after he swerved to avoid a stove that had fallen from Wilkins truck after he had stolen it. Prosecutors stated that the charge was appropriate because Wilkins was in the process of committing a felony. According to prosecutors, Wilkins did not stop until a motorist flashed his lights and honked his horn. Later he gave the man a fake name and two fake telephone numbers and did not produce a driver’s license or registration for the truck.
- Firefighters report one death in fire - Firefighters say at least one person, who was not a firefighter, has been found dead after a wildfire swept through an area near the Northern California town of Concow. Fire officials estimate about 320 fires were still burning in the state this week, including a complex of blazes in Butte County that has forced some 10,000 residents of the town of Paradise to flee. More than 320 active fires are burning around the state. A total of about 1,700 blazes have been sparked this season, destroying about 100 homes.
- Police helicopter saving choking baby - Two Huntington Beach police helicopter crew members, Rick McNaughton, and his observer partner, R.J. Garwood, , were monitoring radio calls when they heard a mother’s 911 plea. The landed the chopper in the 18300 block of Springtime Lane and helped in saving her choking year-old boy. The mother told the dispatcher that her son was not breathing and was turning blue. She was hysterical and having difficulty understanding the first-aid techniques being given her. To complicate matters, significant road construction was going on around the home. The officers "made a judgment call that the others would likely take too long," and they landed the chopper in the street. Garwood went inside the house and was able to dislodge the obstruction that was causing the child to choke. The child is now at a local hospital in stable condition.
- Man allegedly hit the breaks to hurt bicyclists - Christopher Thomas Thompson, who turned 59 today and runs a medical documentation company in Woodland Hills, allegedly slammed on the brakes of his Infiniti in Brentwood on 4th of July. Thompson has been charged with two felony counts each of reckless driving causing injury, battery with serious bodily injury and the special allegation of causing great bodily injury. Allegedly, there was a verbal dispute, the driver sped past the cyclists, then pulled in front of them and slammed on his brakes. One of the bicyclists crashed through the rear window of the car and suffered broken teeth, facial cuts and a broken nose that was nearly severed and the other cyclist suffered a separated shoulder.
- Two year old nearly drowned in pool - A 2-year-old child who nearly drowned in a swimming pool at a Moreno Valley apartment complex was taken to a hospital. The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lasselle Place Apartments of the Riverside. The toddler was transported by ambulance. The incident was under investigation.
- Pedestrian dies on 110 freeway - The man was found unresponsive on the West 8th Street onramp to the northbound Harbor 110 Freeway at approximately 4:20 a.m., from an apparent “medical issue” Villalobos said.”It does not appear to be a traffic-related incident.” The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Big rig crashed into two cars - A big rig and two vehicles collided on the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway early Friday morning in Willowbrook, forcing the semi to veer off the side of the freeway and crash onto a street. At least one person was injured. "The big rig went over the side of the freeway and landed on Imperial (Highway)." The driver was sitting upright when L.A. County firefighters arrived at the scene, but the cab’s exterior had completely fallen apart around him, and the trailer came to rest on its roof.
