There’s a great little mini-mall right  near my apartment. Wow, I never thought I’d say something like that, but in the Valley I’m finding anything is possible if you just take a chance.  And I’m glad I took a chance on Shish.

We have a great Thai, sushi, and Mexican restaurant in that little square as well as the fabulous little yogurt place I reviewed a little while ago, and happily on schedule came Shish Mediterranean to round out the cultural food equation. Unassuming as most Valley food joints, this little cafe reveals fresh, high quality food behind it’s simple doors for a very reasonable price. Fresh, tangy hummus, crispy seasoned pita chips and the incredible chicken kabob plate are among the best of the small but classic Greek/Mediterranean menu.

Shish may not have the most amazing falafel - it’s dense and bigger than most I’ve had so although the flavor is great and the texture gives it a nice biscuit-like quality, it’s sometimes a bit too cake-y for that “melt-in-your-mouth” taste- but everything else I’ve tried has kept me coming back for more.  Especially the sides! Maybe it’s just my lack of experience but they seem to have a great selection that leaves me drooling over the choice of what to get every time. Cucumber and tomato salad and bright, fresh tabouli, classic greek salad, and red pepper hummus to name just a few. They also serve an incredible herbed cheese. I’m not even sure what’s in it but, damn, it’s good.

Just make sure you go there to get the food and not the cool-looking yogurt drink in the little fridge behind the counter. I made the mistake of ordering it even after the owner kindly warned me it was a bit of an aquired taste.  “No problem” I thought. I can down a Mango lassi in one go. Got any Faluda? I’ll drink it in my sleep. I live for crazy, authentic drinks, bring it on!

But, ya.

He was right.

Fortunately we dont’ need a yogurt drink to help us enjoy the great new Kabob kid on the block.  Like I said, the Valley is full of surprises and I’m glad this one sits at my doorstep.
